The Manning Weekly Newsletter
April 5, 2019
Dear Families,
My heart was filled with joy on Monday, as I was surprised to see so many smiling faces and realized how much our kids really enjoy coming to school. While Spring Break served as a refreshing change of pace in the middle of a busy semester, it was nice to have everyone back together again.
We have a big week coming up - an opportunity for our students to demonstrate to the world how much we have learned at Manning! Our staff has worked so hard this year since the first day of school to prepare meaningful and thought-provoking lessons, aligned with standards and differentiated to support the learning needs of each of our students. Now is the time to prove what we're made of.

Logistics for Next Week's CMAS Testing
- Please do your best to avoid absences during this week.
- Please help our students remember to charge their Chromebooks overnight. We don't want their Chromebooks to die on them in the middle of a test.
- We encourage you to pack a healthy snack, which can be eaten during the 10-minute brain break between testing sessions.
- There will be little to no homework next week, so students can focus their efforts on doing their best during each testing session. (If they tell you they have no homework, they are probably telling the truth! :D)
- Achievement Time is cancelled on Wednesday after school.
- Mon, Tues, Wed - all students will take English and Math Units 1, 2, and 3 beginning at 8:25 am.
- Thursday afternoon - 8th graders will begin Science testing and the Silhouettes (featured on America's Got Talent and starring three Manning students) will perform.
- Friday - FLEX Day - the only students who need to come in are 8th graders to finish the Science testing from 8:25 to 11:45. We will also ask 6th and 7th graders to come in if they need to take make-ups. (You will receive a phone call and an e-mail by Thursday afternoon as notification.) No lunch will be served on this day. Theater students are also asked to come in for extra rehearsal. See below.
We are getting excited for our "Passion Week" April 15th- 19th (AKA Dr. Glass's Challenge Week)
At the beginning of this school year, Dr. Glass, our Superintendent, extended a challenge to every school in Jeffco. He asked:
What if...a school, or an articulation area, or the entire school district chose one week when all students and teaching staff were engaged in performance tasks/projects?
· No bells.
· No schedule.
· Teachers serve as the advisors.
· The student projects are approved by panel of teachers.
· At the conclusion, students put on a public demonstration.
What would it take?
The staff at Manning are excited to answer that challenge and have worked hard to create a week of learning (April 15-19) that is rigorous, relevant, and student-driven-- aligned to each of our students’ individual passions and designed to draw out their inherent and abundant potential.
6th Graders will begin the week researching a topic they’re eager to learn more about in order to submit a proposal on what they intend to learn throughout the week. After completing their rigorous research, they will create a project to showcase their learning and share their passion. They can choose any project format-- from fundraising for a cause to writing and producing a play. This student-directed week will culminate in a showcase that’s similar to Walt Disney World Epcot Center. Students will entertain, inform, and inspire their community members as well as develop a sense of pride, accomplishment, and confidence from their projects and their learning. They will be researching and learning from their teachers and peers as well as building new or deeper friendships with those who share similar interests. We will celebrate our students' achievements on Friday, April 19th from 11:30 am - 2:50 pm at the Manning School. Please join us for our Epcot Showcase. For a detailed schedule for the week, including what time your student is presenting, CLICK HERE!
7th Graders will work with The One Billion Acts of Peace Campaign-- an international global citizens' movement designed to tackle the most important problems facing our planet. This organization “started with a simple idea…Everyone matters. Everyone can make a difference. And together, we are unstoppable.” In conjunction with core 7th-grade curriculum, students will become active participants in this international campaign; they will choose a focus area from the 10 described on the website, research the topic, design an “act of peace,” create a display or presentation for their act, and post their ideas on the www.billionacts.org website. This student-directed week will culminate with a written reflection on their learning and an Open House of Projects at The Vista at Applewood Golf Course from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19; families and the public are invited to attend.
8th graders will spend the week answering this question: “What drives me?” With the guidance of a teacher advisor, students will study and learn more about a purpose or career path they are passionate about. By the end of the week, they will create a product or portfolio that demonstrates why they love that work, that proves why/how they can be great at it, that details how they could get paid for it, and lastly (but maybe most importantly) that illustrates how their passion will make the world a better place. On Friday, we will celebrate students’ work by having them present to and seek feedback from a panel of experts in a field related to their purpose as well as a larger audience of community members, families and peers. On Friday, April 19 in classrooms throughout Manning, students passionate about Sports, Performing Arts, or Travel will present from 9:30-noon. Students passionate about Visual Arts, STEM, Public Service and Solving Social Problems, Animals and the Natural World, or Health Sciences will present from 12:45-3:15. Students will share a more exact presentation time with you as their projects proposals take shape.
We hope that you will join us in celebrating the thinking, passion, problem-solving and creativity that our students will showcase. Although we are nervous to undertake something so different than what we typically do, I am certain we will all be captivated and awestruck by the incredible things students discover and invent when we allow them to direct their own learning.
Don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions, and thanks for sharing your kids with us. It is our honor to serve them!

Message from the PTA
The Manning PTA needs you! We are in need of a Treasurer for the 2019-20 school year, and chairs for both the silent auction and the chili cookoff in the fall.
The role of a middle school PTA Treasurer is easy! Really! If you can balance a checkbook - or let your bank balance it for you - you can do this work! The job takes only a few hours each month during most of the year. It is a bit busier at the beginning of the year, but still not as much as you're likely thinking :-)
The silent auction can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like- we have often done a very simple event, and as a chairperson you would be able to go bigger if you want, or not. The chair for the silent auction will help organize a committee to set up the chili cooks and the cafeteria.
Here is information about the new King Soopers fundraising system:
Your group members and supporters can enroll their King Soopers Loyalty Cards online at our secure website, www.kingsooperscommunityrewards.com. We are listed as The Manning School PTA (UY407). Starting April 1, 2019 every time an enrolled member of your group shops at King Soopers using his or her enrolled King Soopers Loyalty Card, your organization will earn rewards. In addition, once a household member enrolls his or her card, all linked King Soopers Loyalty Cards within that household will begin earning funds for your organization. Thank you for supporting the Manning PTA!
Please contact us at manningmiddlepta@gmail.com with questions about a PTA position or the King Soopers cards.
A Business Student Takes Questions from the Audience
Musical Theater Students and Families,
High School Musical is coming fast and we have a lot happening in April! Unfortunately, that means we have missed rehearsal time and all casts will need some extra rehearsals. We are going to start with an extra rehearsal on the flex day, next Friday, April 12, 2019. We may need a Saturday rehearsal at some point, but I feel like a school day is a better option right now. The students will need to be at rehearsal at the following times on April 12.
6th grade: 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
7th grade:10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
8th grade: 1:30 p.m .- 3:30 p.m. (lunch will be provided to 8th grade students since they will remain at school after testing)
If for some reason transportation is an issue and your student needs to stay at school all day, please contact me and make arrangements. We really need all students at the extra rehearsals to make them worthwhile!
In addition, tickets to the musical will go on sale Friday, April 5th at 5:00 p.m. at themanningschool.seatyourself.biz. Thank you and please let me know if you have questions!

PLC Update
At Manning, we strive to live our core values every day.
HONESTY
- Liam Farrow and Jack Ruhl found a wallet that had been left in the auditorium and returned it to the office.
EFFORT
- Tessa Steinke always is happy and energetic. Even when something might be bothering her. It must take a lot of effort to do that everyday. Sometimes when I am upset it just makes me happy to see her so happy. So thank you Tessa for always being a ray of sunshine.
- Lief Hansen helps me do my homework and gets out of his way to help me and I would be failing with out him
- Mrs. Burg always helps us when we need it and even helps us with thing you might not even need
- Charlie Labbo picked up trash that was laying in the halls
- Sensei Jonson lets us learn about the coolest things. In business class we are learning about this thing called Game Theory and how connects to business decisions. I never thought business would make me think so much. I like it.
- Mrs. Zamora is my favorite teacher because she always helps us if we don't understand. She always tells us what we need to do and what our homework is so we aren't confused.
- Austeja Busenaite always puts time into her school work, and helps people when they need help.
- I feel like Maddie Wiser always is trying to do the best that she can. She is a leader and is not afraid to volunteer. I love her positive energy towards everybody and she always does her part, and does it well.
- Personally, I always see Allie Neal with a smile. I have noticed that she shares valuable things often and is alway engaged. Allie is a front seat driver that is not bossy, and is a fabulous leader. It is clear that she is very knowledgeable and is not afraid to share, I love that!
- The past week or so Mr.Miller had his students do chair auditions. I thought that is was really kind of him to donate a whole class period to people who had not started/finished/or needed help. Mr. Miller also purposely set a due date so that students would have the chance to come up to him if they had an issue. As you can see Mr.Miller is really putting a lot of effort into helping his students and making sure they can do the best.
- Jordan Beecher is a very focused learner. She always asks questions and loves to share. I think it is amazing how much effort Jordan puts in, into understanding a topic and helping other understand. I know she is never afraid to help or clarify.
- I would like to thank each of these girls: Maizy Hoffman, Julia Kaufolz & Addison Helms. Not only are they kind, funny, smart, and talented. But they are very caring toward others, I spend each day in access with them and I could not be more thankful. I am so happy that I get to end every day with laughter and a smile thanks to them.
- Lynessa Perez is always working on a certain project in access and researches for it all the time she has really put her effort and valuable time into this!!
- Mr. Beaty tries everyday to make sure everyone gets exercise but most importantly has fun. he does this by splitting up basketball and lacrosse games into competitive and recreational groups ensuring everyone can play at their level and get involved. Mr. Beaty is also a very nice, helpful, funny and the worlds greatest access teacher.
ACHIEVEMENT
- Sammy Kruger, you are the greatest person alive i don't know how I would have survived 8th grade without you being the greatest friend ever, you make me laugh and smile. Thanks for being you
RESPECT
- Mrs. Burg is always helping us with stuff not much people can, THANK YOU!!!!!
- During recces, my friends and I were playing football, one of my freinds have gotten hurt and bolth Sam Larson and Erland Harris were making sure he was okay and defending him from somebody who was calling him "Fragile" becasue he got hurt. They made him feel better through support and respect. Thank you Erland an Sam.
- Mrs. Norton always is a great substitute and makes her anger funny
- Aidan Whitney always supports me in what I do and cares about the things I do
- Makena Knop always helps me when I am down and I can talk to her about anything.
- Whenever she sees someone walking into her classroom that doesn't seem well, Ms. Burg makes sure that she gets that person out of the classroom to talk, to make sure that he or she gets the privacy they need.
- Mr. Luongo always stands outside in the cold every morning just to say good morning to everybody. It really cheers up my day and gives me a fresh start every morning.
- Addison Helms is always very kind and caring to everybody. She is honest and always full of energy. I love how she always tries her best and it always there for her friends.
- From what I have seen Kemply Wellman is always a great worker. In groups, she works hard but is respectful to others. When in the whole classroom she is always fun to be around and does her work the best that she possibly can. I'm never negative when working with her in a group project, mostly because she is so respectful to me, the things we are working with, and the ideas.
TEAMWORK
- I was sick for a week, and Ryder Williams was my partner for my project. He made sure the project was going smoothly while i was gone, and we got an A
- Sam Larson helped me understand and learn how to use code, and what he tought me was really helpfull because I can understand what to do
- I have just really noticed how Greta Runge strives to do her best. She always does her part when working in a group project. I really admire how many of her ideas she incorporates, but also is a great listener to others who speak. It is really impressive.
- Addison Helms was showing lots of teamwork in E.L.A. She worked with me to peer edit our writing. She was very intenfull and helpful. In class, she also is good at sharing and giving input. I love how she will stop what ever she is doing to help. Addison shows true teamwork.
- Delsey Stringer always tries hard and does her best and gets everything she needs to do done while helping everyone else in the group as well. One time while in a group with her, I felt a little left out and she helped me get into the group and work together. I am thankful for that and that is why I am nominating her for teamwork!
