Mind, Body and Soul
Thanksgiving break has arrived, and I hope you enjoy quality time with your family and friends. I also hope you will help your child build his/her mind, body, and soul while away from school.
Below is a schedule that you can follow next week. The schedule can be adjusted according to your child’s age, interests, and abilities. I encourage you to join in the activities too. If you have the opportunity, take a picture and post the photo to Twitter using #CCESohana.
Monday
Mind - Read a story with someone or to someone. Share 3 favorite things about the story.
Body - Take a walk with an adult and find something that is red, orange, yellow, green, and brown.
Soul - Set 3 goals you want to accomplish by Friday (ex. – keep your room clean all week).
Tuesday
Mind - Make math fact flash cards and practice your math facts.
Body - Play tag or flag football with adults and kids included in the game.
Soul - Lay on your floor, close your eyes and think of 5-10 things that are great about your life.
Wednesday
Mind - Create a poem, story, or picture about something you are thankful for using your best handwriting.
Body - Do 15-25 jumping jacks, 10-25 sit-ups, and jog in place for 1 minute. Repeat 3 times.
Soul - Practice mindful breathing. Breathe in for 5 seconds and out for 7 seconds. Do this 5 times.
Thursday
Mind - Help prepare your Thanksgiving meal. Use math to measure, reading for recipes, and science to observe the changes of matter.
Body - Invite an adult family member to do a “turkey trot” and jog around the block together.
Soul - Do something kind for someone else today and notice their reaction.
Friday
Mind - Discuss some of your family’s holiday customs and traditions with a family member or a friend.
Body - Put on some music and do a “Feel Good Friday” dance.
Soul - Review the goals you set on Monday. Did you reach your goals? Do you want to keep working on the goals or make new ones?
Love,
Ms. Nail

Message from the Nurse
Cibolo Creek Elementary School will be conducting spinal screenings on December 10, 2019 for all 5th grade girls. The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity that can affect a person's appearance and health.
The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners who have been specially trained will look at your child's back while he/she stands and then bends forward.
STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR SHORTS OR PANTS FOR THE EXAM. ALL STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. FOR THIS REASON, WE REQUEST THAT GIRLS WEAR A HALTER TOP, TUBE TOP, SPORTS BRA, OR A 2 PIECE SWIMSUIT TOP UNDERNEATH THEIR SHIRT ON EXAM DAY.
Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child's need for regular health care and check-ups.
According to law, all girls in 5th and 7th grades and all boys in 8th grade must receive the spinal screening. If, for religious reasons, you do not wish to have your child screened, you are to submit an affidavit of religious exemption to this office no later than December 6, 2019. Please contact me if you need this form.
Thank you for your cooperation.
