A Word from our Coordinator
Happy Summer, K-8 Families!
We had some challenges to face this school year, but we came together as a Compass Family, and we not only survived, we thrived! We are so proud of each and every one of our K-8 scholars for pushing through during hard times and working to focus on their coursework.
During this last quarter of the 2019-20 school year, our elementary scholars focused on all things spring, learning about the weather, animals, and plants. Our middle school scholars explored the planets in science and learned all about the moon phases, along with earthquakes, faults, and other natural disasters.
Our teachers participated in Social-Emotional Professional Development and were able to implement newfound teaching techniques in their live virtual classes! We ended the school with virtual assemblies for both elementary and middle school. We hope everyone has a nice and relaxing summer and stays healthy. We can’t wait to see what all of our K-8 scholars achieve in the upcoming school year!

We know that often with our scholars each day is different, but what would a typical day look like for you and your scholar?
If we are on tour, they do school aboard our tour bus, where we have a private back room with satellite wi-fi. Sometimes they learn while driving across the country, and sometimes they study while sitting near one of the theaters that they are performing in later that night. They do school work while our crew sets up the show. The rest of the time, when we are not traveling, we are usually on set working on TV projects where we have a dedicated room for our schooling. When we are at home, they are pretty much like normal kids and do their school work there.
What has been your greatest joy in schooling your scholar at home?
Getting to spend more time together as a family and having the flexibility to learn around our busy schedule is awesome!
Share a challenge that you have experienced and how you have worked to overcome the challenge.
Our greatest challenge was while we were in China doing a television show because we were blocked from the internet for almost three weeks. We were unable to do school work. We, of course, got to see so many amazing sites and learned so many things. When we finally arrived in Germany, which was our next stop with internet access, we had a lot of catching up to do! Occasionally when traveling, we will lose internet access on a plane or the bus and lose all of our progress on a test or assignment and then have to start over. That is frustrating, but we deal with it!
Why did you decide to school from home with Compass Charter Schools?
Online schooling gives our family the flexibility to travel and schedule school around our unique lifestyle. We simply could not do what we do without it!
Staff Spotlight
Meet Katie Hooper, Online Elementary School Teacher!
What is your job title and job responsibilities at Compass? How long have you worked for this organization?
Hi, I am Katie Hooper. I am an online elementary school teacher for Compass Charters. I will have my fifth year anniversary with Compass this March. I have worked for online programs for the past eight years.
Tell us your “why” for doing what you do here at Compass.
I love working for Compass; my roster of families have become friends. I love to work
with families as their siblings come into the program. It is inspiring to see the scholars and families grow up in our program and life. I have also made life friends on staff; our team is like a family.
As an educator, is there a piece of advice you’d like to share with learning coaches or scholars?
The best advice that I can give each one of my learning coaches is to make sure to take time for themselves at the end of each school day. Don’t just move into parenting duties, take
some time to read, watch tv, take a break.
Is there a piece of advice you’d like to share with learning coaches or scholars?
The advice that I give, to stay sane during homeschooling is to give yourself time to
learn the system and take some days off, sometimes everyone just needs a break.
Share one thing about you that very few people know.
Something not many people know is that I worked for Disneyland for three years during
college. I was a third-generation employee; my great-grandfather was an original artist, and both my parents and aunts and uncles also worked in the park.
What do you and your family like to do during your free time?
My family loves to do things outside; both of my girls are swimmers, and they also love to
go to the beach. I also love to take my two golden retrievers to the dog park, watching my two-legged and four-legged girls do what they love is my greatest joy. I also like to read a good book.
