WM 4th Grade Curriculum Update

Reading and Writing
Reading
We will be concluding our first nonfiction unit where we focused on summarizing a nonfiction text by identifying the main idea & supporting details, identifying text structure, and keeping personal opinions separate.
Next, we’ll be starting a unit with book clubs where students will be developing stronger character skills.
The big work of this unit is for students to:
identifying the author’s intent by finding the theme of the text
identifying point of view
Writing
We will be finishing & sharing our persuasive essays and then using what we learned about the structure of an essay to write literary essays. We’ll be inspired by the books we're reading in our book clubs.
4th Grade Math
Starting Unit 3: Fractions and Decimals
- Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators
- Locate fractions on a number line
- Add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators
- Identify equivalent fractions and decimals
- Compare
5th Grade Math
Starting Unit 3: Place Value & Decimals
- Divide multi-digit whole numbers
- Read, write, order, model, compare decimal numbers
- Multiply and divide whole and decimal numbers by 10
- Add and subtract decimal numbers to the hundredths place
- Identify equivalent fractions and decimals
Science
Throughout the school year 4th graders will study:
Environments: organisms and how they interact with their ecosystems
Energy: circuits, magnetism, and how energy transfers
Rocks, Soil, and Landforms: weathering, landforms, and mapping Earth’s surface
Social Studies
We will study geography beginning with longitude & latitude, global location before studying geographical features of Wisconsin.
After that, we’ll start studying the first people to live on the land we call Wisconsin.
LMC - Library
Through fiction and nonfiction, we’ll explore themes of gratitude, family, and food. Students will recognize familiar characters and also identify personal connections to the texts.
Music
Technology
Students are reviewing proper keyboarding technique by working through specific lessons at their own pace. The fourth grade typing goal right now is to type 15 words per minute with 85% accuracy.
Art
How do art and technology connect? (iPad Exploration: Isometric App)
PE
We are finishing up our throwing and catching unit and will begin our team challenge and cooperation unit. Students will work together with partners and small groups to complete certain challenges. Towards the end of the month (Nov. 18th), we will be starting gymnastics!
Guidance
We will be finishing up our Bully Prevention Curriculum. Students will further their understanding of their responsibilities as bystanders to bullying and learning about cyber bullying.
