From Tim: topic of the week
I’m sure you are aware of the teacher walkouts planned for tomorrow, Friday the 27th, amongst many of our public schools in support of increased state funding for education. As a state, Colorado’s support for public schools and teachers – by any measure – ranks near the bottom of the list nationally. I am hopeful that the walkouts and other actions on behalf of families and faculties will propel taxpayers to put appropriate pressure on lawmakers to begin to address needed change.
While it may be tempting to excuse ourselves from the debate, given Stanley’s status as an independent school, it is clear that we are not immune from the issues facing teachers everywhere. One of our concerns is how we provide salaries and benefits that at least keep up with the rising cost of living in our city and state. I can’t offer easy answers, but I can tell you that our Strategic Plan 2020 and senior management conversations this year have both focused on the essential health and well-being of our professional community.
There are many elements that go into the quality of life of teaching at Stanley – and many critical ones are non-monetary – though the reality is that salaries and benefits are fundamental. I want you to know that we will continue to do all we are able to do to direct available resources where they are most effective, which is in supporting the quality of teachers we have. As we work this summer and fall in creating a strategic financial plan to support the goals outlined in Strategic Plan 2020, please know that the needs of our faculty and staff, personally and professionally, are a top priority for our school.
A lot to look forward to this week!
In other ways, our school days are proceeding as they always do, into the eventful final weeks of school. Spring production season is in full swing, with second graders taking the stage last week for a rock ’n roll-infused show and 8th graders hamming it up in the Cabaret this week. You don’t have to tell a Stanley kid twice to act a little silly, sing out loud, play some music, or join a group in a comedic sketch.
And speaking of acting silly, I agreed to run 5 laps tomorrow in the Fun Run for every thousand dollars raised, and I’m pleased, and somewhat chagrined, to announce I’ll be running somewhere north of one hundred laps. Congratulations to all of our K-5 students who raised funds. I look forward to seeing them on the track!
On Saturday afternoon, I hope to see you at Bulldog Fest. It’s not too late to get tickets, or of course you can buy them on site. We’re looking forward to another great Stanley event!
All the best,
Tim
Learning report: Summer
Somehow during the school year, our children’s schedules are so packed with homework and friends and events that it can be difficult for families to slow down and connect in a meaningful manner. True, there are breaks during the year when trips can occur, but these vacations away from home typically involve either a destination resort/locale or else a visit to extended family. The pace of these trips can be just as frenetic as the pace of the school year resulting in memorable... >>more
