Comet Connection
Keeping you connected with Silver City ES!
ADMIN UNIVERSE
Hello, Comet Families!
We hope you are continuing to enjoy your summer, wrapping up summer vacations and camps, and thinking about school supplies and the start of the school year on August 5th!!
As we move closer to Open House and all the beginning of the year events, I wanted to follow-up with you and share our plans. As of now, our plan is still to begin the 2021-22 school year as a "normal" school year. As with last year, Dr. Bearden gets regular updates from the Department of Public Health and all his decisions related to COVID are based on current Forsyth County data. This week we have seen an uptick in cases in the state, as well as in the county, but our data still show a very small number of cases in our county, as well as a very low 7-day test positivity rate. However, if things change between now and the first day of school, the district and our school will communicate any updated plans to you.
Even with starting out as a "normal" school year, we will continue to strive to keep all of our Comets safe this year. We will still provide masks to any Comets who want them, but forget them at home. We will provide times for hand-washing and sanitizing and have extra stations throughout the school building for this. We will continue to alter our arrival and dismissal procedures to keep our hallways from becoming too crowded. We will continue to monitor local data provided by our county and make adjustments when necessary to maintain a safe, orderly and high-quality learning environment for our Comets!
We hope you enjoy this edition of the Comet Connection as we share the following information with you:
- Backpacks and School Supplies - FREE (this Saturday)
- 21-22 Open House Plans
- News for Upcoming Kindergarteners
- News for New Comet Families
- Summer Reading Challenge (Optional)
- Upcoming Dates
- Community Events and Resources
Sincerely,
Mr. Sloop
Backpacks and School Supplies - FREE!
We have had a generous group of community members step up and purchase new backpacks and school supplies for some of our Comets. They are giving them away to families this Saturday, July 24, from 9:00am-4:00pm at the SilverSmith Subdivision Pool House (see the address in the flyer below).
These are being given out on a *first come, first serve* basis, until they run out.
We greatly appreciate this donation from our community members and we so hope our Silver City families will take advantage of these backpacks and supplies!

News for Upcoming Kindergarteners
If you so desire, parents and guardians are allowed to walk their children to classrooms on the first 2 days of school. Teachers and staff are on duty to assist with directions on those days, as well as the first two weeks of school, to help students successfully learn to independently navigate the hallways.
Please check out our webpage created specifically for our new Kindergarten students to find information on kindergarten screening, school supply list, Round-up/Open House, a video tour of the school and a "Day in the Life" video for our Kindergarten students.
Click here for information about Open House on Tuesday, August 3.
