Student Activities this week!
Third week of Advent!
The Third Week of Advent is Joy. Usually the rose coloured candle is lit, which inevitably brings with it the question of why it is a different colour. The third Sunday of Advent is rose (pink) because pink symbolizes joy, the joy that Jesus is almost here.
PRAYER while lighting the pink candle:
“O Almighty God, gracious provider and giver of life, we anxiously await the celebration of your birth. Like the people of long ago, our ancestors in faith, we, too, are in need of light, in need of direction, in need of your Word, to show us the way. May the Joy of the Lord be our strength this Christmas season. Help us Lord, to focus on you. We pray that you hear our prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

Grade 6C want to Share the Journey of Christmas
The grade 6C class (see photo below) are going for a walk to support Migrants on December 19th to jubilee park. This walk is to raise awareness about the plight of many migrants throughout the world. We are also accepting donations to The Development and Peace Share the Jouney campaign.
It’s important to keep in mind this Christmas that every 30 minutes people are forced to leave their homes and that there are currently 68 million migrants throughout the world. This includes many children that have no choice but to follow their families. Some have taken shelter in migrant camps but there still are many migrants looking for homes and support. Watch the video below for more information.

OLMP Annual Snowball Dance
The grades 7-12 will once again have their annual Semi-Formal Snowball Dance from 7:00-10:00 pm on Wednesday, December 19. Each student is allowed to bring ONE guest. Refreshments will be included, as well as a Christmas-themed photo spot to take some fun pictures! Permission forms will be available and must be signed by a parent/guardian and submitted before the dance dates. See the link below for the permission forms - hard copies will also be provided for pick up on ticket sale days. Tickets will go on sale for $10.00 during lunch time from December 5th to 19th. We will also be in need of parent chaperones, for this dance, so if you are interested please indicate so on on your child’s permission form.
By popular demand, the grades 5-6 will be given the option to dance during the last two periods of the school day on December 19th at no cost, and get to listen to some great music! Hope to see lots of student participation!
Book Recommendation
Book Recommended: Copper Sunrise
(was Shawn's Favourite Book as a Child)
Author: Bryan Buchan
Recommended by: Shawn Haggarty (Superintendent Elk Island Catholic Schools)
Book Description: Copper Sunrise is a historical fiction that explores issues that surrounded interactions between European Settlers and the Indigenous Peoples. The story is of a young boy from Scotland, who, during the early days of colonization in Canada, encounters the last of the Beothuk people, and despite his father's warnings, befriends a boy named Tethani.
Why it is recommended: I was a non-reader that struggled through school. In Gr. 1, the teacher wanted to fail me because I could not read. I struggled in subsequent grades because I couldn't read well. My biggest fear was when the teacher asked for kids to read aloud, most of the time, the teacher would go up and down the rows having a child read the next paragraph. I would count ahead how many students in front of me and then skip to the paragraph I would likely be asked to read. I would then pre-read the paragraph over and over so that when it came to my turn, I would be able to passably read the paragraph aloud. This experience never left me, as a student teacher, I remember all the feelings coming back up when I had to read to the class aloud.
As for Copper Sunrise. This was the first and only book I ever read from beginning to end in my first nine years of school. I read the book in Gr. 5 and fell in love with the story. Inside I was very proud of myself that I was able to read a complete book. Copper Sunrise gave me a confidence in myself that I never had before.
Modeling reading, reading with your children, and talking about the things they like to read are all ways to increase literacy and learning for our youth! Chat with your son or daughter about a book recommendation you could submit together! All submissions can be emailed to Mrs. Smith at kristys@eics.ab.ca
