Summary of ESD#52 School Board Meeting
Community, Integrity, Respect & Pride
Dear Ennis Mustang Families & Community,
I hope this finds you all well. In an effort to improve communication and transparency of the operations of the Ennis School District, I will be sending a school board meeting summary after the regular meeting. Please know that this is only a summary and not official minutes. If you are ever interested in viewing previous agendas and meeting minutes, you can find all of that on the school website www.ennisschools.org.
Please contact me with questions, comments, or concerns.
Sincerely,
Casey Klasna - Superintendent
Board Meeting Summary for September 13, 2023
Summary
The duplex being constructed by Bridger Built is almost complete. We are waiting for Northwest Energy to hook up power. This should be ready within the next two weeks. This duplex was funded by the Flex Fund and the ESSER funds (covid relief).
The football scoreboard is completely installed. The scoreboard was donated by Lehrkinds, the installation was donated by Continental Construction, and the labor to run the electrical was donated by Tony Tezak. The costs to the district were minimal, including primarily some engineering costs as well as some excavation.
The board passed the first reading of Policy 4330P - Facility Use. The board added language to the policy that would allow more open gym opportunities for grades 5-12 on Sundays using the elementary gym. This policy will be considered for adoption at the October 16th school board meeting.
The Trustees and those in attendance at the meeting took a tour of the school library to learn more about the organization of the materials and different sections of the library. Mrs. Pedersen, librarian, gave the tour and fielded questions.
The Trustees hired a new route driver, Jordan Stone, pending all proper certifications. We are hoping that our new drivers in training will be ready to drive towards the end of October.
The substitute list was approved by the Trustees. Substitutes are hired yearly. The new wage for substitutes is $104/day which is a $16/day increase from last year.
A sample Friday program for students K-5 for the second semester was discussed at length. This included the length of the day, activities for students, costs, etc. The discussion was very good and the Trustees will discuss the logistics in depth at the October 16th meeting.
The administration suggested to the board to look at splitting 6th grade sports into their own and not including them with the 7th and 8th grade. With the growing numbers, it poses several issues including supervision, safety, quality instruction, and skill development. For example, there are 41 girls out for JH VB and all of them are in the elementary gym. With a stand alone 6th grade program, it will allow kids more opportunities for practice and competition. For the JH BB season, there will be changes, which the school will keep parents informed about.
