NIU Campus Recycling

Spring 2013 News Update

April is Earth Month!

The Northern Illinois University campus was buzzing with a wide variety of sustainability projects this month. At the beginning of the month, Sarah, our Undergraduate Recycling Coordinator and senior Environmental Studies Major, attended the Sustainable Schools Symposium at Loyola University. There, she was able to network with other higher institutions to see what they were doing to improve recycling and sustainability on their campuses. Governor Quinn gave a keynote address, emphasizing Illinois as a leader among institutional sustainability.

RECYCLEMANIA 2013 Results

NIU Ranked Top 40 in the Country, #1 in Illinois!

This year, Northern Illinois University finished in 39th place out of 263 colleges and universities in the RecycleMania Competition Division. This is a huge improvement from 2012! NIU has increased it's overall recycling rate from 25.3% in 2012 to 47.16% in 2013 during the recycling competition. The advertising of single-stream recycling, along with new signage, were huge drivers of this success. Education among students, faculty, and staff about recycling also increased thanks to our recycling staff and the great student organization volunteers that helped with various events.

Here is a recap of NIU's final standings from the 2013 RecycleMania! competition:

  • Grand Champion: 39 (47.16% recycling rate)
  • Per Capita Classic: 88 (15.6 lbs/person recycling throughout the competition)
  • Gorilla Prize: 45 (370,100 lbs of recycling)
  • Waste Minimization: 61 (33.07 lbs/person trash)
  • Electronics: 51 (9,286 lbs)

Northern Illinois University was also ranked #15 out of all 4-year universities participating in the competition, #1 in Illinois and #1 in the MAC!
