Barrier Islands - shallow waters and sand dunes

Wetlands - partly covered by water and has a variety of plants and animals

Tidewater - closest to the coast

Sand Hills - loose soils and warm climate

Places you could visit

  • Lake Waccamaw State Park - a unique park with rare plants and endangered animals. It is open year-round.
  • Tryon Palace in New Bern - It has the North Carolina History Center. It also has 14 acres of gardens. It was the first permanent capitol of N.C.
  • The Lost Colony - an outdoor drama in Manteo. Performances are in the summer.
  • Oak Island Lighthouse - in Caswell Beach. It has a series of ships ladders with 131 steps. It was the last lighthouse built in N.C.
