June 2019 Newsletter

A Note from the Principal

Dear Wade King Families,

It is hard to believe there are just a few days of school left!

Your children have accomplished some amazing things this year. As our year ends, I hope you will take time to reflect on those accomplishments and celebrate them. Attending your child's Portfolio Celebration will provide you with an opportunity to do this as you look at his/her work from this year and past years. I also invite you to join us for our End of Year Celebration on the last day of school from 8:10-9:10 am. During this celebration, our school community will celebrate the things we have done together and say good-bye to our 5th graders and to staff who will be leaving us.

Here's to a great last few days of school!

Our Mascot Is...

We had a group of students working alongside our second grade teachers and office team to inquire into the purpose of school mascot and to consider possible mascots for Wade King. These students had MANY reasons why an owl, dragon, wolf, or salmon would be a good mascot. Last week, they shared those reasons with our school community during our Monday Morning School Meeting. Students and staff received an official ballot to cast their individual vote last week, and our new mascot was announced today... We are the Wade King Wolves!

Kindness Week - This Week

With the support of several 4th and 5th graders, next week is Kindness Week at Wade King. It will begin with our Monday Morning Meeting focus on ways to show kindness, continue all week with kindness stations during recesses, and end on Friday with a kindness lunch.

Families are invited to join us for lunch on Friday, June 14th for our 'candlelight' kindness lunch. Kindergarten lunch is at 10:45am, 1st grade lunch is at 11:05am, 2nd grade lunch is at 11:25am, 3rd grade lunch is at 11:45am, 4th grade lunch is at 12:05pm, and 5th grade lunch is at 12:25pm.

Part of Kindness Week is supporting our Bellingham Food Bank by collecting non-perishable items and making Get Well cards for people who are ill at St. Joseph's Hospital. These are both optional ways for students to show kindness in our community.

11th Annual World Tour - Japan

THANK YOU Wade King PTA for sponsoring our 11th Annual World Tour. After a year of inquiring into Japan's geography, culture, music, and art, we celebrated on the evening of May 31st. This event gave us an opportunity to enjoy Japanese teriyaki, sushi, and mochi, as well as make more origami, learn about bonsai trees, play Japanese games, and connect with others in our school community. Thanks again to our PTA and EVERYONE who volunteered to make this event a success. We appreciate you!

Gold Acorn... Awarded to Taylor Conot!

We are so happy to share with you that Taylor Connot is this year’s recipient of the Golden Acorn Award! The Golden Acorn is a very prestigious Washington State PTA award that is given out by local PTAs/PTSAs for exemplary and outstanding volunteerism and service to PTA. Taylor was awarded a certificate and a Golden Acorn pin, and her name has been placed on the Golden Acorn plaque, which hangs in our school. A Washington state PTA scholarship to benefit students will also be given in Taylor’s name.

Taylor Connot is one of those quiet worker-bees who is working in the background over the course of several years to ensure our students have quality and relevant enrichment, especially surrounding our World Tour locations. Taylor finds resources from all over this part of WA to provide cultural presentations, music, art, theater and dance performances for our World Tour event and in classrooms throughout the year. From professional storytellers during lunch to cultural trunk displays, Taylor has found ways to incorporate international studies with our IB program. Taylor is committed to seeing the World Tour as not just an annual celebration, but an opportunity to embrace learning throughout the school year, expanding the understanding of our students about their global neighbors.

Thank you, Taylor, for all your diligent work and support of our IB program and our Wade King community! You have a wonderful, giving heart and you are a pleasure to work with. We appreciate all that you do for our school.

Attention Families Leaving Wade King

At the end of the school year, families of 5th graders and families of students who will not be attending Wade King, will no longer have access to Seesaw. The link below has directions to save any photos and videos that you want to keep. If there are any that you want to save, be sure to do that soon! If your child will be at Wade King next year, you will still be able to access Seesaw.

Your Child's Next Teacher

As students and families leave for summer vacation, they are often wondering when they find out who their next teacher will be. As in years past, you will receive an email and/or text message from our school with this information. You can expect it on Friday, August 23rd. One difference this year is that we will not be posting class lists on our office windows as your child's privacy is important to us. Please be sure that your contact information and preferences are set up in Skylert to be sure you receive this information. There are directions below!

Meet and Greet & First Day of School

We hope your family can join us for Meet and Greet on Tuesday, August 26th, from 12:00-1:00 pm. This is a chance for you and your child to meet their new teacher, visit new classrooms, and reconnect with friends.

The first day of school for 1st - 5th grade is Wednesday, August 28th.

The first day of school for kindergarten is Thursday, August 29th.
