mikeroweWORKS Foundation Offers Travel Scholarships for Competitors
SkillsUSA is pleased to announce that the mikeroweWORKS Foundation is once again offering a number of scholarships of up to $1,000 for SkillsUSA member students to attend the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Ky., June 19-24. This is the sixth consecutive year that the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, in partnership with SkillsUSA, has offered scholarships for SkillsUSA members who compete and place first in their state championships and who otherwise would not be able to attend the national championships for financial reasons. All SkillsUSA students who meet these competition criteria are welcome to apply.
The mikeroweWORKS Foundation scholarship program provides assistance to eligible students who are pursuing an education in a vocational or similar trade-related program. The mikeroweWORKS Foundation has a priority focus on high-school and college/postsecondary students who are working toward careers in manufacturing, construction, automotive, engineering and STEM-related trade occupations. However, this opportunity is open to all state gold medalists attending the SkillsUSA Championships who have the financial need for the travel funds.
Scholarships will be awarded based on students’ written narratives describing their need for the scholarship, how they have benefited through participation in SkillsUSA and why they chose their particular trade or technical skill. Applicants are also required to provide a recommendation written by their SkillsUSA advisor or the state association director in support of the financial need.
Applicants need to apply online at: http://www.skillsusa.org/membership-resources/scholarships-financial-aid/the-mikeroweworks-foundation-competitor-scholarship/. Scholarship applications must be received by Friday, May 27 (midnight EDT). Applications submitted after this time will not be considered.
5 Hour OHSA Card

This year at the SkillsUSA Championships, CareerSafe will offer all national contestants a free voucher for this new program. Students who complete it will receive a certificate. Topics covered include preventing falls, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, hazard communication, blood-borne pathogens, and other common workplace-safety principles that provide a basic foundation of practices.

Dress Code for All Participants
Registrants traveling as a group should remember that they are representing SkillsUSA and forming a public impression of the organization. When traveling, registrants are not required to wear official SkillsUSA attire, but they are encouraged to wear clothing with the SkillsUSA logo — for example, an embroidered polo shirt with khaki slacks. At all times, whether traveling or during the conference, registrants’ overall appearance should be clean and neat. Their attire should be appropriate for the occasion. Contestants must follow the clothing requirements in the official technical standards for their contests. During formal events such as the opening and awards ceremonies, official SkillsUSA attire is required.
Opening and Awards Ceremonies Attire
As an organization, we must portray a professional image to the business, industry, education and government representatives attending the opening and awards sessions. Official SkillsUSA attire should be worn to the opening ceremony. The national board of directors has ruled that students who come on stage during the awards ceremony be dressed in official SkillsUSA attire or SkillsUSA Championships work clothing. Students not wearing official SkillsUSA attire or Championships work clothing will not be allowed on stage. Other attire is not allowed, including jeans, shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, sneakers, boots and sandals. This rule will be enforced, and any awards earned will be presented backstage if the student is not dressed properly.
Official SkillsUSA Attire
- Women: Red SkillsUSA blazer, white blouse (collarless or small-collared), knee length black dress skirt or black dress slacks, black sheer (not opaque) or skin-tone seamless hose and black shoes
- Men: Red SkillsUSA blazer, white dress shirt, solid black tie, black dress slacks, plain black socks and black dress shoes.
