Principal's Message

Dear Shaull Families,

The school year is well underway here at Shaull Elementary! We are wrapping up our Responsibility Unit as part of the Portrait of an Eagle and will soon begin the Confidence lessons. Students have been earning "High Flyer" tickets these first several weeks and we will soon complete a drawing for those Shaull High Flyers! Additionally, students will be working on their Hopes and Dreams goal setting within their classrooms and within Art class. In our next newsletter, we will feature our Portrait of an Eagle Award Recipients. These students will be nominated throughout the school year for displaying the Portrait of an Eagle competency that is our focus at that time.

Within the next week, parents of 4th and 5th grade students will receive the Pennsylvania Department of Education PSSA Parent Report. These come directly from the Department of Education to the school and will be sent to you in the US Mail.

As we move into more fall like weather, I can't help but to think about our Fall Party day which is on October 27th. That same evening, the PTO is hosting the Fall Costume Dance here at the school from 6:00-8:00 PM. We will have more information to come about these two Fall events as we get into next month.

I hope that you enjoy this edition of Shark Bites and have a wonderful weekend!

Mr. Richard Tysarczyk

School Security Drill

Next week, Shaull Elementary will participate in our mandated security drill. As stated in the district newsletter last week, it is critically important to prepare our school community for any potential real life security incidents by providing our students and staff with these mandated training opportunities. Our drill this Fall will be a standard lockdown drill. We will participate in two additional security drills throughout this school year.

If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. T.

ALL students receive a Fun Run t-shirt from the PTO even if unable to donate, but parents MUST select their students' t-shirt size online before 9/22.

Business sponsorships are our bread and butter! If you own a business, or work for a company that may be interested in supporting Shaull students and staff, a $250 donation will include your logo on 600+ t-shirts!

Fly Like an Eagle!

Cumberland Valley School District's Portrait of an Eagle is our vision for all students upon graduation. Through the immersive Kindergarten through twelfth grade experience here at CVSD, our students will be able to demonstrate these seven competencies for success in adult life.

This year we will be awarding students each month with the CVSD Portrait of an Eagle Award Certificate. Be on the look out should your student come home with an award!

Additionally, students will be awarded the "High Fly"er" tickets on an ongoing basis to be entered in for regular prize drawings. Students may earn lunch with the principal, snack, a game in the lobby, or prizes from the Principal Prize Bin.

We look forward to celebrating our students' successes this school year!

Elementary Student Dress Expectations (including our policy on hats and hoods in school)

In order to maintain a safe learning environment, our CVSD Elementary Parent Handbook states the following are not acceptable to be worn at school. We greatly appreciate your support with this at home:

1. Clothing and/or accessories which create a disruption to the learning and learning environment for staff and students. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Transparent, revealing, or immodest garments, exposure of undergarments, costumes and/or costume material
  • Clothing which displays language/symbols which violate stated guidelines related to age-appropriateness, profanity, vulgarity, divisive, harassing, and/or threatening conduct.

2. Clothing and/or accessories which create a health or safety hazard. Examples include, but are not limited to:
  • Hats/hoods which hide or blur the face (hats may be worn during outside recess and on the bus)
  • Large, oversized jackets, trench coats, overcoats, western dusters, and overcoats of a similar nature during school hours. Students wearing the above items should store them in their lockers/”cubbies” upon arrival at school.
  • Baggy Pants – Students are prohibited from wearing excessively large, baggy pants, pants that drag on the floor while walking, or cargo type pants with excessively large pockets. (Tailored type cargo pants are acceptable.)
  • Unsafe Footwear – Students must wear shoes at all times during the school day. Slippers or other footwear with soft soles cannot be worn. Open-toed shoes, extremely high heels, and platform shoes may pose a hazard for students and may be prohibited.
  • Chains – Students shall be prohibited from wearing large chains, chains attached to wallets, spiked dog collars, spiked wrist bands, or any similar item that poses a danger to the student body.

A note about Smart Watches and Cell Phones

Students are not permitted to have their cell phones on them during the instructional day. Students may bring phones, but must have them secured in their backpacks/cubbies during the day. The school is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen cell phones. This expectation is going very well here at the school.

With that being said, more students are coming to school with smart watches. Students may wear their watches to school. However, students may not make/take calls and texts throughout the school day while in class. We have had cases already this year where students are texting their parent from their watch to come and pick them up from school. Any student who is not feeling well must follow school procedures, which includes going to see the school nurse if they are not feeling well. Only the school principal and school nurse may send students home. Please have a conversation with your child regarding the appropriate use of their smart watch if they wear one to school. We greatly appreciate your support with this as we wish to have students focused on their instruction during the school day.

Shaull Drive School Zone

The Shaull Drive access road in front of our school has had a 25 MPH speed limit since the building was constructed in 2008. This summer, our access road will finally be designated a "School Zone." Please always use caution when driving through Shaull Drive whether accessing from Wertzville Road from the East or from the Fair Hill Development to the North.
