Mustang Messenger
2018-2019 School Year: Volume 36: Week of June 3, 2019
Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
It's the Final Countdown
I feel like I need to start singing Europe's 80's song, "The Final Countdown." 9 1/2 days.....final field trips.....final assessments....different lunch schedule....bulletin boards are coming down and most importantly, classroom reflections and celebrations. Be sure to take time over these next two weeks to reflect with your child of their successes and accomplishments this year. Some of your students may be reflecting on their academic accomplishments and others might reflect on their behavioral accomplishments. Both are important as we foster and instill independence and integrity with these students.
Thank you to all of the parents that helped out at Field Day! It was a huge success and the kids had a BLAST playing games and having fun!
This issue is the second to last Mustang Messenger. There is a lot of information included to help your children spend time learning this summer. Do not have your child fall victim to the "summer slide." Too much learning has happened this year and it needs to keep going throughout the summer.
Let's end on a powerful and positive note Grandview!!!

What is Summer Slide?
“Summer slide” is the tendency for students, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. A few key facts about summer slide:
- Learning and achievement are perishable. The average student loses a month of academic-calendar learning each summer.
- Students see greater academic dips in math than in reading.
- Children not reading over the summer can fall on an average of 2 months in reading during the summer. And, summer slide is cumulative, with these learning losses building up each summer.
- Students from households with access to books over the summer see significantly more gains in reading scores from spring to fall than students from households without access to books
- Differences in children’s summer learning experiences during their elementary school years can ultimately impact whether they earn a high school diploma and continue to college.
How can your Child Not Fall Victim to the Summer Slide?
- Access to books is critical. The public library is an excellent free resource for families to have access to books of a wide range of interests and reading levels, as well as librarians to guide children and families in selecting great books.
- When children select reading materials themselves and read for enjoyment, they receive the most gains in reading achievement, including better reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development.
- Summer programs, such as those offered at Grandview and the public libraries, that allow and encourage children to choose what they read are likely to be most successful.
- Children and teens tend to read more when adults in their lives encourage them to read, and also when they see those adults reading often themselves.
- Children that feel that reading is fun tend to read more often, so summer programs that help make reading enjoyable and social are most successful.
- Reading just 4 to 6 books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores from the spring to the fall, so even small steps are very beneficial.
- Preventing summer slide is most effective when community organizations—including schools, public libraries, community centers, parent groups, social service agencies, and others—work together to encourage kids to read, make reading fun, and to reach families about the importance of reading over the summer.
- Parents, caregivers, and other adults can help stem summer slide by reading themselves, as children that see adults in their lives reading often tend to read more themselves.

- Deliver enrichment opportunities
- Provide mini – grants to enhance and sustain programs
Want to Support CEF, here is how?
- Every Thursday is Clarenceville Education Foundation Trojan Day at Fantastic Sam's.
- Come to a CEF Event....Lace Up Clarenceville, Reverse Raffle Dinner, Golf and Bowling Outing
- Link your Amazon Prime Account to the Clarenceville Educational Foundation
Safety First
- During the school day, no one can enter the building through any door, but the front door.
- Everyone needs to sign in and get a sticker if you wish to walk towards the classrooms during the school day. Staff indicated that they are unsure if the adults in the building have signed in and look to see the visitor stickers. I know that we are familiar faces to the office, but not all of the staff knows all of the faces, so please take the extra steps to sign-in.
- If you have a GSRP or Pre-school student, after dropping your little one off, please do not walk through the hallways. If you wish to get your other child to class, please walk around to the front and sign in. It seems like a silly extra step, but arrival and dismissal is very hectic and all adults should be identified.

Bookflix for Grandview Families
The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....
https://digital.scholastic.com/site/launch/bkflix?ucn=600063987
There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.

If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.
This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.
Enjoy!!!
Transportation Changes
Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!
Job Opportunity
We are hiring noon aides for the 2019-2020 school year. Stop in the office, fill out a background check and join the fun!!! Great hours and great fun!!
