Week Thirty-one: April 18-April 22, 2016
This week , let's observe some FUN days!
April 19 is National Garlic Day! (WHO KNEW?!?!)
This stinking rose is a member of the lily family. This family also includes onions, leeks and shallots. While garlic originated in Asia over 7,000 years ago, it is used in a variety of cuisines, but it is also used for medicinal purposes. It is considered an herbal remedy for colds, and it has been suggested to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Modern science has proven garlic’s antibiotic properties.
National Kindergarten Day is celebrated annually on April 21st. This day honors Friedrich Wilhelm August Frobel (April 21, 1782 – June 21, 1852) who is credited for starting the very first Kindergarten in Germany in 1837. Frobel was a German teacher and a student of Pestalozzi who laid the foundation for modern education based on the recognition that children have unique needs and capabilities. He created the concept of the “kindergarten” through play and activity institute as a social experience for children for their transition from home to school. His goal was that children should be taken care of and nourished in “children’s gardens” like plants in a garden. Today, most states in the United States offer free kindergarten to children ages five and six. Kindergarten is a fun and memorable time in the “social experience of the transition from home to school.”
National Jelly Bean Day is celebrated each year on April 22. William Schrafft, a Boston confectioner, introduced jelly beans to the public in 1861. It was during this time that he urged people to send his jelly beans to soldiers during the American Civil War. Jelly beans were, at one time, associated specifically with Easter. However, that has changed and jelly beans are now a favorite of many and enjoyed any day of the year.
