Gilbert Park Elementary Newsletter

Principal's Message
Dear Families,
We have three special days at school this month. The first was this Monday and Valentines Day. What is great about this day is that it is all about love and kindness. This is something we all can use more of! The second special day is Tuesday, February 22. The date in numbers is 2/22/22. It is a palindrome date meaning it can be read the same from forwards or backwards. It also happens to fall on a Tuesday. The third special day is February 25th. This marks the 100th day we have been in school so far this year. After February 25th we have just 68 school days left this year! Can you believe it?!!!
There is a lot of great information in this week's newsletter! Please be sure to mark important dates coming up. More information about conferences and scheduling will be coming out soon.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Stacie Moncrief
Principal, Gilbert Park

Attendance is a Priority!
Instruction occurs from 9:15 until 3:30 every day.
Please avoid scheduling or planning for your student to be let out of school prior to 3:30.
It is extremely important that students arrive and leave school on time to ensure they do not miss any instructional time. It is also very disruptive to the classroom when we have to interrupt the teacher to call and get a student early.
School doors open and students go to class at 9:00 am. Students who arrive after 9:15 are considered tardy. Please arrive at 9:00 for your student to have the best start possible for their day.
Thank you for your support!
New Language Arts Curriculum
The District is preparing to adopt a new K-12 Language Arts curriculum for the 2022-2023 school year. The Curriculum Department met with teachers and students to learn more about what DDSD needs for its next reading and writing curriculum, and the next step in the curriculum review process is to hear from the David Douglas community. Learn more about the curriculum the District is reviewing and give your input at the elementary curriculum presentation on Feb 22. A zoom meeting link will be e-mailed out to all families. If you don't receive the link by the week of the event, please contact your student's school.
Translation will be available in Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
To access the interpretation rooms:
Once you have logged into the zoom meeting, you will see a globe icon at the bottom of your screen. Please click on the icon and select your preferred language. You will automatically join the interpretation room. If you cannot find the globe icon, please click "More" located at the bottom of your screen Select Language Interpretation After, select your preferred language and select done located on the top right-hand corner of your screen. You will hear the original audio at a 20% volume when you are inside the interpretation room. If you do not want to hear the session in the original audio, please click "mute original audio."

Youth Truth Survey Results
We believe, and research shows, that student and stakeholder voice matters.
Family members at Gilbert Park were surveyed in December 2021 about their perceptions of their school in terms of Engagement, Relationships, Culture, School Safety, Resources, and Communication and Feedback. This report represents feedback from 125 family members. Based on the enrollment we had a 58% response rate.
Here is a look at three of the 6 focus areas. We are currently analyzing the data to look for areas of strength and areas we can improve.

Introducing the DDSD Bus Pass Program
The David Douglas School District is rolling out a new program for school bus riders. Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, all eligible riders will be required to register to ride the bus and must carry a badge. The program is currently being rolled out a few schools at a time, this winter and spring. District bus drivers will issue ZPass badges along with lanyards and backpack straps to students currently riding a district school bus.
This program is designed to enhance bus rider safety by giving the Transportation Department and parents the ability to track when and where each student gets on and off a district school bus. The District has partnered with a company called Zonar to provide the badges. Students must carry their badge, a ZPass, with them to ride the school bus. The ZPass will be scanned as students enter and exit the bus, recording the card number, location and time. Only select district staff and parents will have access to this information. Parents can view ridership information by using ZPass+, a ridership alerts app from Zonar. View details about the Bus Pass Program under the Transportation section of the DDSD website: www.ddouglas.k12.or.us/departments/transportation-information/
Gilbert Park School's New Mascot
The votes are in and we have a winner!
Gilbert Park's new mascot is.... THE OTTER!
The next step of our change process is the design phase. Our district graphic artist will be working on the design of what our mascot will look like. We want students to be involved in this phase as well! Students this week can submit drawings and artwork of what they think our mascot image could look like. Students can bring their drawings and artwork to the office or email or share it on google. We will share all of these ideas with the Graphic Artist that she can use as inspiration.
