The Morris Minute

May 2019

Welcome to The Morris Minute!

This is the place to find updates for staff, parents, and families of Morris Elementary. Thank you for checking it out!

From The Desk of Mr. Anderson...

Hello Morris Families!

WOW! Can you believe May is here? Construction is finishing up and we are excited for our new additions to be available for use with our students! Of course, this will bring about MAJOR changes to Morris and our daily operations and routines. We will do our best to communicate the changes to parents and stakeholders, along with new procedures and routine expectations, as soon as we can. We plan on taking some time this summer to plan how we are going to utilize our drop-off and pick-up zones.

Things tend to move pretty quickly in May. For some strange reason, it becomes increasingly hard to balance everything as activities come up, and school comes to a close. (I still can not believe I am typing that!) We will continue to work hard with your students and try our best to continue to grow them as well-rounded little citizens! Maintaining structure is very important for the success of our students. We understand that, and at the same time recognize the need for celebrating the great things they have accomplished throughout the year.

I hope Spring actually "springs" very soon and we can see the sunshine and great temps for the remainder of the year. I look forward to seeing you out and about at our kids' activities! I wish you well for the end of the year and all of your summer plans. I hope they are good plans!

Thanks and Have a Great Summer from Your PBIS Team!

As the 2018-2019 year comes to an end, the PBIS team would like to say thank you for allowing us to celebrate with your students this year. Morris students have repeatedly shown us Bondurant’s BEST (Be kind and respectful, E-Excellent Effort, S-Stay Safe, T-Take responsibility). Our students are kind, thoughtful and respectful not only in our schools, but also in the community. Students have earned many celebrations and all were full of fun. Students earned ice cream tokens from Culvers, a dance party in the gym, extra recess with a cookie, lunch with the Bluejay, Manners for Music and a Frosty the Snowman celebration. We hope everyone has a safe and happy summer! We will see you in the fall.

I always love walking through the halls and seeing the work our students create throughout the year, and these little Earth Day creatures in the First Grade Hall made me smile!

A few reminders from the Nutrition Department

Reminder: You can apply for Free/Reduced Price Meals anytime during the school year, even if you have been turned down before & your circumstances have changed. You can find the 2018-2019 Iowa Application for Free & Reduced Price School Meals on the school website under Departments and Food Services. You can also pick up a hard copy in any building office or contact Karen Miller at and request to have one mailed to you.

Also look for last minute menu changes on the school website under the menus tab.

Mrs. Bahr & Mr. Anderson celebrate the art and artists Elizabeth Dalton, Teegan Lower, Miles Mallicoat, and Jackson Scuito. Their artwork will be on display at the Des Moines Art Festival and then at the Des Moines Library before being returned to the artists next fall.

Please remember to save Box Tops for Morris Elementary! Our students love to see all of the awesome new books when the Box Top money comes in! Your students can turn box tops in at the office, or to their classroom teacher.

Recycle Those Markers!

Once again this year, we will be collecting used/exhausted markers at the end of the year to send in for recycling. Last year we kept 26 POUNDS of markers out of the landfill! Collection boxes will be in the front office. As a reminder, we also collect used crayons, box tops, and pop can tabs.

In case you missed it, here is the map that shows the traffic pattern changes on Grant Street - the "No Left Turn" policy is in place weekdays from 1-4pm.

A few notes from Ms. Jen

May is going to be a whirlwind of activity! Be sure to check emails for dates and times of all of the extra stuff happening so you don't miss anything. :) While our school year may be winding up, we have lots to look forward to for next year. We are anticipating about 700 students in our building as we welcome our Bluejay Beginnings preschool classes down from Anderson next fall. Our new wing, the Purple Hall, will be up and running (and almost full) if projections hold for our enrollment numbers. We will utilize the new south parking lot next school year as well, so be sure to look for emails over the summer about traffic flow, drop off, pick up, and all of the other fun things that come with an expansion.

This has been a jam packed year, and I'm sure next year will be just as full. Thank you to all of the parents who do such a great job of communicating any changes with your student to your child's teacher, Mary Jo in Transportation, Nurse Dori, and me - It makes a huge difference in the smoothness of the day to have those heads up as soon as we can. Keep up the great work!

Kindergarten registration is open for next year already - be sure to watch for an email from the District Office as to when you can register the upper grades (should be the first week of July) We will send out the school supply list by the end of the year, and also post it on the website. It seems the stores have the back to school sales in June anymore, so we want you to be ready. :)

I will be in the office over the summer, but am not always in by my computer or phone - if you need to stop by for any reason, it is best to call or email ahead of time so I know when to expect you and can be in the office when you arrive. I will have a few days off here and there (for my class reunion at the end of June - eek!) but otherwise, will be here 7:30-4 most days. I hope you all enjoy the summer break with your kids and we will see you back here before you know it!
