Let's take a closer look at normal peer conflict vs. bullying.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT BULLYING IS NOT:
- unkind words that occur once
- rough-housing or rough play that is not intended to hurt
- an act of aggression towards another
- behavior that may appear inappropriate to the adult, but the child does not perceive as hurtful
- an argument between two or more people who disagree on an issue
- not liking someone-It is very natural that people do not like everyone around them and as unpleasant as it may be to know someone does not like you, verbal or non-verbal messages of "I do not like you" are not acts of bullying.
- accidently bumping into someone
- a single act of telling a joke about someone
- arguments
All of the above-mentioned behaviors are unpleasant and will be addressed but they should not be confused with the definition of bullying. Many times, labeling a single act of aggression can turn into bullying just by people perceiving it that way.
Students and parents are encouraged to report bullying and harassment to any teacher, counselor, or administrator and to fill out a complaint form available at every school, online at ccboe.com, and in the Student Code of Conduct.
