Astronaut Announcements
July 15, 2022
From the Desk of Mrs. Kinghorn
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! We are excited to welcome all of our Andersen Astronauts to Andersen Elementary and know this is going to be an amazing year. To our new families, welcome! You have chosen an amazing school with a dedicated staff who build genuine relationships with each and every child. To our returning families, welcome back! We are excited to have you return to Andersen where our mission is to empower all students to become resilient problem solvers. We believe in developing problem solvers by creating a school environment where students and staff are inspired to take risks.
Over the next few days and weeks you will receive a lot of new information from the school and your child's teacher. Please check your child's backpack daily for important information and resources. In order for us to keep you up to date with what is happening at the school level we ask that you check your email and ensure we have your most up to date contact information. Each Friday, we send out a weekly eblast with a link to our weekly newsletter. This newsletter will have important dates, upcoming events and any need to know information that will help your child be successful here at Andersen.
Save the date for our upcoming Student Success Night. This event will be held Thursday, August 4th with two sessions being offered. The first session is 5:00-5:40 and the second session is 5:50-6:30. More information about this valuable night is below but we are hoping 100% of our families are able to attend. Just like the name says, this is a night where we will come together and create ways for your child to be successful this year.
I look forward to seeing you all on Monday, July 16th at Meet the Teacher. Please come visit us anytime starting at 4:30 until 6:00 p.m. During this time you can check out your classroom, say hi to the specials teachers and buy a new school shirt. We are excited to welcome all our Andersen Astronauts back to campus.
I hope you take these next few days to relax before what I promise will be a great school year. Thank you for choosing Andersen Elementary and for your continued support. See you at Meet the Teacher!
Sincerely,
Kristin Kinghorn

Exclusion Guidelines and Health Protocol 2022-2023
To help you make decisions about whether your child should attend school, we have put together a list of guidelines. Your child will not be allowed at school and will be sent home if the following condition(s) are present:
1. For any symptoms below or any the CDC has listed as COVID-19 symptoms, the most current CUSD COVID-19 Exclusion Guidelines will be followed.
2. *Fever of 100.4° or higher. A child must be fever-free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication) before returning to school. If COVID-19 has not been ruled out, follow CUSD exclusion guidelines.
3. *Difficulty breathing, Headache, Loss of taste and smell.
4. *Persistent Cough.
5. *Sore throat with fever and/or white spots on the throat. If strep throat is diagnosed (note required), the child must be on medication and fever-free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication) before returning to school.
6. Rash with/without fever and/or signs of illness or behavioral changes. (i.e. chicken pox, measles, etc.) Even non-contagious rash conditions can be a symptom of a health condition....even if it is just unsightly, uncomfortable, or itchy. Medical attention may be needed to reduce symptoms or disease risks.
7. *Vomited (not caused by motion sickness or a gag reflex unassociated with illness) A child must be free of symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
8. *Diarrhea of two (2) or more loose/watery stools in a 24-hour period unless other signs of illness are present. A child must be free of symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school. 9. Skin sores on an exposed surface that are weeping fluid and cannot be covered.
10. Red, itchy, and purulent draining eyes. If conjunctivitis or “pink eye” is diagnosed, the child must be on medication for 24 hours before returning to school. If not diagnosed by medical provider student must remain out until symptoms have cleared.
11. Prolonged and/or persistent stomachache that does not resolve.
12. Swelling or pain at a level that may interfere with learning.
13. Earache with severe discomfort and/or fever.
14. Toothache with facial swelling and/or fever.
15. Active (live) Head Lice. A child must remain at home until treatment with pediculicide. A child may return to school if there are no live lice present. Please notify the Health Office as the student must be cleared to attend class.
*If a student does not have verified immunity to COVID-19 as outlined by Maricopa County Department of Public Health, then the most current CUSD COVID-19 Exclusion Guidelines will be followed. Please feel free to contact the school health office with any questions. Thank you.
Drop Off and Pick Up
During morning drop off, all Kinder through 2nd graders, along with older siblings, should be dropped off at drop off "B" in front of the school by the office area. Please stay in line, pull all the way down, and DO NOT get out of your car. We will have staff available to open the car doors and help students out of the car. Please wait until the car in front of you moves so we can ensure safety of our students and staff. Once again please do not park your car and get out in the drop off lines. All 3rd through 5th grade students should be dropped off at dismissal A which is the area facing Pennington and is marked with the large John M. Andersen sign. Once again, pull all the way down, do not cut in line or weave out of traffic, and do not get out of your car.
We are working hard to provide efficient traffic flow in our student pickup area at dismissal time. You will receive an orange paper that has your child's name and grade on it. We are asking that you display this orange paper in your window as you proceed through pick up "A" and "B". Remember that all kindergarten through 2nd grade students must be picked up at "B" and all 3rd-5th grade students picked up at "A". Oldest siblings should go with the youngest siblings to keep families together.
If you are walking, please remember to cross at Pennington only with the crossing guard. Parents and students are not allowed to cross the driveway to the east greenbelt at any time.
The front parking lot will close each day at 2:00 p.m. to ensure safety for all our students during dismissal. Please do not plan on parking in the parking lot, exiting your vehicle and picking up your child at the gate.
It does take us longer to get through all the cars during the first few days of school. Please be patient with us as we work as fast as we can to get everyone out of the heat and in their car. This will go quickly if you have your sign in the car and you follow the directions above.
