Mrs. Strohecker's and Mrs. Bogle's Second Grade:
We also helped Jr K get ready to build a dinosaur with a fun dino website.
In math class we have been learning about customary and metric units and applying our skills of money and time. We are really seeing how math is a daily part of our lives and not just one class in school.
We are really excited to begin our big STEM project-Operation Pollination!

3rd grade loves reading graphic chapter books. Captain Underpants, Big Nate, and Geronimo Stilton are some of our favorite books we enjoy reading. This year as a creative writing project we will be working on creating our own graphic chapter book, our chapter book will highlight principals and students from Chesterbrook Academy! Each student will write one chapter and create colorful illustrations for the book. We started by examining how writers such as Dav Pilkey write and illustrate graphic chapter books, and focused on the characters, setting, and plot of the books. Taking a close look at how writers organize and create their books will help us create our graphic chapter book. Then we interviewed Mrs. McCall and Mrs. Myers to obtain background knowledge for our characters. Our next step is to storyboard the plot of our book. Please stay tuned for exciting updates!!!

Fabulous Fourth Grade!
Fourth Grade students have become experts on the Science topic of Matter! Over the past month students worked in teams of three, with each team member becoming an expert on one of the sub categories of Matter: solids, liquids and gases, physical and chemical properties, and mass density and magnetism. The students researched their sub categories using various web sites as well as scientific text books, took notes pertaining to their research, and organized their notes into a keynote presentation to teach the other members of their group about their sub category. Once all members understood all three sub categories they worked as a team to present a skit, song, and experiment to the rest of their classmates about Matter. Fourth Graders ended this unit on Matter, by taking it outside of the classroom and educating all three the Kindergarten classes about Matter and guiding them in 2 experiments on density!
Fifth Grade is Fantastic!
Welcome to Mrs. Vail's incredible voyage with fifth grade!
The Merry Month of May has seen the fifth graders working hard towards their Spring Play performance, and looking towards the stars as they study the planets and our solar system. To begin our unit, the students used the pacing skill they learned at Echo Hill to pace off a scale model of each planet’s distance from the sun and each other. We discovered that there was no way we could pace in a straight line due to the confines of our school yard so ended up having to turn around several times. Then we turned our attention to the source of all life on Earth – the Sun! We discovered that like the earth the sun has layers, some that are similar to the Earth’s. We found one major difference and that is the inner atmosphere of the sun actually gets hotter as you move away unlike our inner atmosphere that gets cooler. As we move on into May, we will be measuring shadows using yet another skill learned at Echo Hill, how to find north, making models and discovering more cool stuff!
Social Studies will come to a conclusion with a trip through the time of Westward Expansion as students create their own covered wagon, decide on a route they would like to travel, and then complete a research paper about that trail. We will be busy!
