6th and 8th Grade Math
With Ms. Watkins
February 12, 2016
Office Hours (math help after school)
I will have office hours on Tuesday this week due to presidents day
Monday's 3:15-4:00 in room 403 with Ms. Watkins
Wednesday's 3:15-4:00 in room 401 with Miss Brockman.
This is a time when students may come in and begin their homework, work on reassessment, or just receive additional help with math. All middle school students are welcome to come to either or both office hours.
Expectations:
- Work on math material first.
- Keep voices down so that everyone can focus on their own material.
- If a student wants or needs a snack, it must be nut free.

6th Grade Math
This week on Monday we will continued to talk about congruent figures. With the 1-1 program students learned how to find the resources and materials they would need for class and completed their warm-ups on a google form. Students learned about arcs and lines in circles on Tuesday. Wednesday we talked about circle graphs and I showed them how to create them on google sheets (unfortunately it is not possible to insert charts or graphs into google sheets from iPads or chrome books). I demonstrated how to use proportions to calculate the measure of the central angels for each part of the circle graph. On Thursday students used their compasses to create geometric constructions: congruent lines and perpendicular bisectors. Friday we didn't have class due to the cultural fair and the valentines part.
Next week we will review on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday students will get their quiz back and we will go over it as part of the review. Thursday the will take their chapter 7 test. On Friday we will begin chapter 8 with estimating perimeter and area of figures.
There have been several times that I assign watching a video as part of the homework. This will continue throughout the year. I have talked with the class about the importance of watching the video and taking notes. If your child is having trouble accessing the video please arrange for them to come to school right at 7:40 so that they can watch it in my room on one of the school computers.
8th Grade Standard Pace
This week I taught about point-slope form of linear equations on Monday. Tuesday students were able to review for their quiz and on Wednesday they took the 6.1-6.5. For the second half of Wednesday's class students were given an investigation worksheet on parallel and perpendicular lines. The week concluded on Thursday and Friday with students using point-slope forms of linear equations to write the equation of the line of best fit on scatter plots.
Next week we will discuss absolute value graphs on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday students will be reviewing for the Chapter 6 test and on Friday they will take the test.
There will be several times that a video will be assigned as part or all of the homework for the rest of this year. If your child is having difficulty accessing or watching the videos please arrange for them to come to school right at 7:40 so that they can watch it in my room or in their homeroom on one of the school computers.
8th Grade Accelerated Pace
On Monday we discussed absolute value functions. Tuesday students were able to review for the test and on Wednesday they took the chapter 6 test. For the second half of Wednesday's class students will worked solving systems on linear equations graphically. Thursday and Friday's lessons focused on using substitution to solve a system of linear equations. Thursday focused on how to solve using substitution, and Friday students were able to apply that strategy to problems were they were given the equations and word problems were they had to set up the equations.
Next week we will discuss how to use substitution to solve systems of linear equations on Tuesday. Wednesday I will show how to use matrices to solve systems of linear equations and we also continued to apply systems of linear equations to word problems. Thursday we will focus on linear inequalities and on Friday students will take a quiz on solving systems on linear equations by graphing, substitution, elimination and applying systems on linear equations (7.1-7.4).
There will be several times that a video will be assigned as part or all of the homework for the rest of this year. If your child is having difficulty accessing or watching the videos please arrange for them to come to school right at 7:40 so that they can watch it in my room or in their homeroom on one of the school computers.
