The Air-Sea Connection
How are the ocean and the atmosphere connected?
The sun directs all life on earth. Without the sun, nothing on our planet would exist! Solar energy can do more than just provide energy for all life on earth. It can drive winds and ocean currents, temperature, and weather. The sun provides the temperature coditions on land and sea!
The Coriolis Effect
The Coriolis Effect is a significant concept. The Coriolis Effect explains why we have wind in all directions, not just too and from the north. It's the tendency for the path of a moving object to deflect to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.
Now lets see how The Coriolis Effect and convection influence the wind. Convection moves in a circular pattern, this gives the air or wind a circular flow rather than a straight north-to-south pattern. The wind patterns exist in smaller reigions called Atmospheric Circulation Cells. Their are three in each hemisphere with induvidual flow patterns.
