Rotation Day 3
Welcome Back
HPE Parents,
We are excited to have started the 2018-2019 school year. These first few days have been great! We love reuniting with previous students and getting to know our new Patriots. HPE is full of very special kids who bring smiles to our faces each day! Thank you for sending us wonderful kids ready to explore and learn.
As we organize the first of the year information, please be sure you have completed the online forms for your child. This must be done for all students through Skyward Family Access and includes health and emergency contact information as well as the iPad rental form. Thank you for completing this information today in order to help us be prepared to best care for your child!
As a reminder, HSE Schools will be observing early release times every Monday. Beginning Monday, August 13, school will end at 3:20 every Monday. Dismissal procedures will run the same as other days of the week but it will simply occur 20 minutes earlier on Mondays to allow for consistent professional development and teacher collaboration.
We appreciate our HPE Patriot Families and look forward to a great year!

HPE Cafeteria News
Welcome parents to a new year at HPE and in the Café! My staff and myself are excited to serve your child a nutritious breakfast and lunch. We will start serving breakfast on Monday, August 13.
Last week Andria Ray, our Food Service Director, sent a letter, via skylert, that explains the new procedures Food Service is starting, and I encourage you to view that as well.
Our prices have stayed the same this year with lunch being $2.60, milk $.50 and breakfast is $1.25. Bottled water is $1.00. After Labor Day we will be selling snacks to students and the prices will vary from $.85 to $1.00.
If your child has an allergy that will effect their lunch please be sure to fill out the health form and return it to the nurse. If there is a food you do not wish your child to eat or other restrictions please feel free to contact me via a phone call or email.
As in the past, you can pay online with efunds or send cash/check in with your child. If you are sending money in, please put it in an envelope with your child's first and last name, student ID number and their teacher. Student ID numbers can be written in the memo line of checks.
Please do not use nicknames or just your child's first name. Remind your child to turn the envelope in to their teacher.
Again I look forward to serving your child and if there are any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Easy Ways to Help the PTO
If you shop on Amazon or at Kroger, check out these completely free and zero effortways to raise money for the HPE PTO. The prices are the same, the service is the same, you shop the same way, but a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the PTO, that’s it!

On Amazon, just go to smile.amazon.com/ch/20-0114174 to link your account to the PTO and then check out using smile.amazon.com everytime--you cannot access this through an app so fill up your cart and then open a browser to check out or shop directly on smile.amazon.com

For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards. HPE Student Handbook
Note from the Nurse
Welcome Back for the 2018-19 School Year!
~ Please remember to log into your child's Skyward account and fill out a health form for each one of your children. It gives me a snap shot of your child's health background and your contact(s) name/number in case of emergency or general questions.
Initially, the Health Form was not available on Skyward but has now been added to the list of forms to complete to fully register your child.
~ For incoming Kindergarten/new students to the District, to be compliant with the State of Indiana required vaccinations, I will need a copy of updated and complete immunizations by the first day of school or you're child will not be able to attend. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me to discuss your particular situation.
~ For students who will need to have medication given/kept in the clinic (daily lunch time meds, EPI pens, asthma/neb vials & tubing, seizure meds), you can stop in at HPE office to pick up the paperwork or go to the HSE District web site under the Parent's tab. There you will find a link to the Health Services page which has the required paperwork to be filled out by the Dr and parent for any medications that will need to be given/kept in the clinic for the school year. You can bring the paperwork and medications to me in the clinic during the Ice Cream Social which will make for a more smooth start on the first day of school!
~ If you have any questions or concerns you would like to discuss with me before the school year starts, please feel free to give me a call.
I'm looking forward to a healthy and fantastic 2018-29 School year!
Andrea Redmond, RN
Speech Language Corner
Welcome back! I will start the year off by completing speech and hearing screenings within the first two weeks of school. Hearing screenings will be conducted with all students in Kindergarten, grades 1 and 4, and all new students at HPE. If your child does not pass the pure tone hearing screening, you will be notified via a letter and a re-screening will take place in 2-4 weeks with follow-up correspondence. If you do not wish for your child's hearing to be screened, please contact Mrs. VanHorn or the HPE office at 317-915-4210.
Speech screening will be conducted with all students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, and all new students to HPE. Speech errors that are age appropriate will be documented, monitored and in some cases, packets will be sent home to practice speech error sounds. Non age appropriate speech errors may warrant speech therapy, thus you will be contacted to discuss program options.
Please refer to the speech and hearing website http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/academics/speech.aspx) for more information regarding our speech and hearing services in the HSE district. Feel free to contact me via email (tvanhorn@hse.k12.in.us) if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's speech or hearing abilities.
Thanks and let's have a great year!

Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, you still need to contact the office (by phone or email) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Safe Visitor Badges
Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the Safe Visitor App (IPhone) or have your badge ready and available to be scanned when you come into the school office. The app is in Google Play for other types of phones. To find the Safe Visitor app, search for “SafeVisitor” (there is no space in between the words).
Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
