October 2022 Newsletter
A Note from Mrs. Davis
Dear Sawnee Families,
A HUGE thank you and shout out to everyone for a very successful Sawnee SOARS fundraiser. We raised over $60,000 thanks to your hard work and dedication. The students enjoyed their prizes and fun was had by all. When you see a member of our PTO, please tell them thank you for their organization and support in making all of this happen.
This month holds a lot of fun for us at Sawnee. We have our Family Connect Night on October 19th, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Early Release October 19th and 20th, no school on October 21st, and Spooktacular Drive Thru on October 27th. Whew! So much to do.
Speaking of Family Connect Night, a few families have asked for more clarification regarding this night. Every month we have a night dedicated to connecting with your family when the teachers do not assign homework so you may spend time together. The date is chosen in conjunction with other West and Central Cluster schools to encourage the whole family to be together. At Sawnee, we have a BINGO "board" full of ideas for the month to spark interest. Students receive the BINGO board from their teacher, which they turn in at the end of the month to be entered into a raffle drawing. Even if a BINGO is not achieved, students may turn these in to be entered into the raffle. The winner is announced on the Morning News. We encourage you to take time to connect and make memories.
Please remind your students to check the lost and found in both buildings. We are gathering quite a collection! Enjoy this beautiful weather!
As always, it is a pleasure to partner with you.
Kimberly Davis
Principal

What's Happening at Sawnee?
7 Mindsets - Everything Is Possible
The Everything Is Possible Mindset teaches that we are all capable of living extraordinary lives. Students learn that everything which exists today was once just an idea until someone believed it was possible and took the actions to make it into reality. This is true with our lives as well ā they become, in many ways, whatever we expect them to be. Throughout the lessons for this mindset, we work with students to help them understand the incredible promise of their lives, and to envision extraordinary happiness, meaning and success on their own terms. We seek to instill the belief that their goals are possible, and to foster the courage, discipline and persistence to act on achieving their dreams.
The 4 critical components of Everything is Possible includes:
1) Dream Big
2) Embrace Creativity
3) Think Positive
4) Act and Adjust

Squash and Spinach
There are two different types of squash: summer and winter squash. Summer squash, like zucchini have thin skins and can be eaten whole -- skin, seeds, and all. Winter squash like pumpkin and butternut squash have robust skins that aren't usually edible and has much harder flesh, and their seeds generally need to be removed before eating (though they can be toasted and eaten separately).
Pumpkins don't have to be orange. We're most familiar with bright orange jack-o-lanterns or pie pumpkins, but pumpkins themselves can actually be orange, green, white, yellow, or even red!

Clinic News
Thank you SO MUCH to all those who have donated to our clinics! We are so grateful for our Sawnee Family š

School Attendance is very important to the success of each student.
Sawnee Elementary has a āStrive for Less than Fiveā unexcused absence per year policy. We support every student in reaching his/her greatest potential and encourage parents to support children in maximizing academic instruction opportunities. Some of the potential consequences of absenteeism are listed below. We understand that injuries and illness occur. As such, parents should send in a doctor's note for necessary absences. We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. Related to that goal, school counselors will be presenting body safety lessons beginning in October. Please see the attached letter for more information. Parent Letter

STEM
The Georgia Ag Experience
Fourth and Fifth graders have a better understanding of how farmers grow their food thanks to the Georgia Ag Experience visiting their school. The Georgia Ag Experience is a mobile classroom housed in a 36-foot trailer, which gives elementary students the chance to take a virtual field trip to a farm without leaving their school. Colorful farm photos, interactive technology and displays of products made from various ag commodities grown in Georgia highlight the importance of agriculture to their daily lives. The Georgia Ag Experience highlights Georgiaās poultry, beef cattle, cotton, peanut, timber, horticulture, fruit, vegetable and pecan farms. Students learned how farmers plant and harvest their crops, take care of their livestock and preserve the natural resources on their farms. The classroom also highlighted the many career options in agriculture. All exhibits and lessons that are part of the Georgia Ag Experience have been professionally designed to meet science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) standards.Sawnee PTO
