MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
I’m happy to report that our first day of SHIELD testing has been going well. Mrs. Durkan and I along with the support of classroom teachers helped students learn the procedures we will use for testing and we were able to test all students whose parents did not opt them out of testing. If you have changed your mind and would like to opt out of testing, you may do so at any time by emailing me directly at dophus@d57.org. Similarly, let me know if you would like to opt back in for testing. We will be testing again on Monday as our typical testing day will be on Mondays moving forward. The Friday test this week was a result of being off of school last Monday.
After the first trimester of learning, it is a great time to check in with parents to talk about our students’ progress. One way we plan to accomplish this is by hosting Parent Teacher Conferences. This year, conferences will be on Wednesday, November 10th, Tuesday, November 16th and Thursday, November 18th between 3:45-7:45pm. Parents will have the option to either come in person to Fairview for their conference, or hold a Zoom conference if that is preferred. Once you’ve signed up for your conference, please plan to notify your child’s teacher if you prefer a Zoom conference so they know to expect to meet with you online. Parent Teacher Conference sign ups will be done online once again this school year. I will email all families on Tuesday, October 26th at 5:00pm with the link to sign up for your conference. Please mark your calendars as conference times will fill up quickly. If you have a preferred time, the best strategy is to sign on right when we release the sign up link so that you have the best chance at securing a conference time that works best for you.
Next Friday, our wonderful Fairview PTO is hosting its annual Boo Bash. This event will be held outdoors for safety reasons, so dress for the weather. See the flyer below for more information about this exciting event! I know the students who attend will enjoy the Trunk or Treat, The Fat Shallot food truck, DJ, games, costumes, and the opportunity to socialize with their friends. A parent must accompany their child for the duration of this event for supervision. If you are interested, we are looking for volunteers to help at the Boo Bash. Sign up using this link if you are willing to help! We hope to see you there! We are also looking forward to the possibility of offering PTO Special Lunch once again this school year. Please fill out this survey if you haven’t already to let the PTO know if you are interested in volunteering and to share if you’d be interested in your child participating. More information will be shared by the PTO including information on how to place an order once we know more specific plans for Special Lunch. In next Friday’s newsletter, we will share information about the procedures for the Halloween parade including our plans for parents who want to pick their child up for lunch to help them with their costume, so stay tuned!
Thank you for taking the time to read through the remainder of this week’s newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
We would like to remind parents that look-alike guns, knives, and other violent objects which may be included with a Halloween costume are not permitted in the school building. If your child’s costume includes items of this nature, please leave them at home for trick-or-treat activities or other family excursions. We must provide the children a consistent message regarding objects which are considered dangerous and it is confusing to allow these items in school for any reason. Students’ costumes should always be age appropriate.
PTO "READ-A-WAY" PROGRAM
Click on the graphic for more information and this month's reading log calendar.
Concurrent students can drop their completed calendars off at the school. We will contact you once your certificate is ready to be picked up for your free pizza.
KEEP THE FRONT OFFICE INFORMED
When emailing your student's teacher regarding vacation plans, illness, doctor appointments, etc., please include the front office staff in your communication.
Also, please contact Fairview School’s office if your home/cell phone number, emergency contact numbers, or email address have changed.
If you have moved, please immediately contact the front office so we can update your student's records.

DID YOU FORGET SOMETHING?
We realize that sometimes students leave school at the end of the day only to realize that they forgot a workbook or homework at school. Students are only allowed to return to their classroom until 4:00 p.m. to retrieve forgotten items.

BUS BULLETIN
Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion; train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise. Click on the bus for more information and to register.
