MoASSP Announces Missouri HS POY
2019 Jim King Missouri High School Principal of the Year
Dr. Greg Mathison, Principal at Marquette HS in the Rockwood School District is the 2019 Jim L. King Missouri High School Principal of the Year
COLUMBIA, MISSOURI – (February 13, 2019) - The Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MoASSP) has selected Dr. Greg Mathison, Principal at Marquette High School in the Rockwood School District, as the 2019 Jim L. King Missouri High School Principal of the Year (POY). MoASSP will officially present the award during the annual MoASSP Spring Conference at the Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, MO., on Monday, April 1, 2019.
Dr. Mathison was awarded this recognition in part because of his ability to build and strengthen relationships with all stakeholders in the school community. Rockwood Superintendent, Dr. Eric Knost, has this to say about Dr. Mathison. "Dr. Mathison is truly a child-centered leader....he consistently finds ways to improve. He is undoubtedly a life-long learner."
Marquette High School has an enrollment of over 2,300 students. Dr. Mathison works hard to connect with all kids and make MHS feel smaller through his leadership. "He is a good communicator who is collaborative and connected. All of those qualities contribute to a safe and comfortable learning environment where kids can thrive," adds Knost.
"A principal does not need to have all the right answers, but he or she needs to possess the confidence to work with others to seek those answers out. Dr. Mathison’s commitment to continuous improvement is why I feel so blessed to have learned from him and to have had him as my principal," comments a student from Marquette.
MoASSP Executive Director, Clark Mershon and MoASSP Program Director, Doug Mirts, announced Mathison's award during a surprise announcement at lunch. The selection was made from more than 900 high school principals in Missouri.
Dr. Mathison was named principal at Marquette HS in 2010 after serving three years an assistant principal at Marquette. He has been a member of the Rockwood family for the past 20 years, working as a math teacher at Lafayette HS teaching math from 1999-2007. Dr. Mathison earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Maryville University.
MoASSP sponsors the Jim L. King High School and Middle School POY programs. In the fall of 2017, the MoASSP Board of Directors elected to rename the award after Dr. Jim King. Dr. King was the third Executive Director serving MoASSP for 16 years. MoASSP is proud to recognize administrators statewide for exceptional school leadership.
Dr. Mathison will be in the running to represent Missouri in the 2019 National Association of Secondary School Principals' POY program.
