Book Tasting in Mrs. Haislip's Class

A book tasting is a chance to expose students to different genres and to get them engaged and excited about reading. These could be books of their own, teacher recommended or genres they may otherwise had never read.

African American History Month

February is African American History Month. This month is set aside to pay tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

WHO WAS NAT TURNER??

Nat Turner was an enslaved African-American preacher who led a four-day rebellion of both enslaved and free black people in Southampton County, Virginia, beginning August 21, 1831. The rebellion caused the death of approximately 60 white men, women, and children. Click on the link below to learn more.

STOPiT Solutions

IWCS recently joined many other school divisions by adopting the STOPiT App. STOPiT is an online reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors, consisting of an app and a back-end incident management system for school administrators. As parents, you have access to the STOPit mobile app and the ability to report bullying behaviors anonymously. Please see the letter sent home last week for the Hardy passcode.

Parent Resource Center Update

The Special Education Parent Resource Center will be presenting information about Reading Support on February 19, 2020. Come join us for this opportunity to review the stages of our reading program (ARC) as well as strategies to help student progress. The IEP topic that evening will be Related Services. The session is from 5:00 - 6:00pm, in room 40 at Windsor Elementary School. The parent resource center will be open by appointment only during the month of February. The elementary school years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication, life skills and character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family. Our counselors work with students and families to help identify barriers to learning to ensure equity and access to resources for all families. We cultivate a safe and supportive environment through positive connections and empower our students to reach their full potential. A Love of Learning at Hardy Elementary

Please join us on February 12th for "A Love of Learning" 1st semester awards ceremony at Hardy Elementary. Additional information on grade level ceremony times will be sent home later this week. Also, lunch will be delivered and served in the classroom on this day.

Box Tops for Education

Please help us collect as many box top's as you can find! This fundraiser is a great support for our school and PTA. We use funding from the Box Top fundraiser to help plan and purchase instructional items, fund the annual "Field Day" during the last week of school and support the student body of Hardy Elementary. Please look in your pantries, cabinets, laundry rooms, etc. and cut out ALL of the boxtops you can locate! A complete list of participating companies are attached below.

We continuously works on teaching the importance of healthy eating habits, as part of healthy lifestyle. Parents are encouraged to prepay for their children's meals. The website www.LunchPrepay.com , enables parents secure credit card payment options. Registration with the K12 Payment Center gives parents access to their student's lunchroom balance and meal history, and offers e-mail notification when the account balance drops below a set limit.

Updates and Important Information


  • School hours are 8:55 AM -3:45 PM. Students can arrive starting at 8:35 AM. Students may not be dropped off prior to 8:35 AM. If you bring your child to school after 8:55 AM, you must escort them inside to the office and complete a tardy slip.

  • Please see nurse Nancy Cowan for prescription medicine intake. All medicine must be accompanied by a parent and include a physician’s prescription. Students are not allowed to transport medicine to school.

  • Please refer to the school district website for information on bus routes and times. Click on the following link for the most updated bus route information: https://iwcs.edliotest.com/apps/pages/busroutes

  • Breakfast is served in the classroom starting at 8:35 AM each morning. You may upload money onto your child’s account at https://www.k12paymentcenter.com/ or send in cash or a check.

  • Please don’t forget to complete and turn in the school lunch form. The class with the most forms submitted will receive a special treat from the cafeteria.

Behavior Expectations


Parents, as we enter the 2nd quarter of the school year, please review the following behavior expectations with your child. Our goal is to help build life long relationships with our students by modeling GREAT citizenship on a daily basis. We are continuing our behavior expectations of Growth, Respect, Empathy, Accountability and Trustworthiness; however, we are specifically defining how these characteristics look in each location within the building (such as hallways, restrooms, offices, cafeteria, playground/school grounds, bus etc.).

  • The G.R.E.A.T expectations document is based on a proactive behavior model approach which teaches the behaviors, reinforces and recognizes students who are able to model these behaviors and has systems in place to support students who have a difficult time or may present with more challenging behaviors.
  • Behavioral expectations are clearly defined- GREAT- Growth, Respect, Empathy, Accountability and Trustworthiness- for various settings and taught to all students in the school.
  • Once appropriate behaviors have been defined and taught, they are acknowledged in various ways on a regular basis. Specifically, the stable to purchase items or house points.
  • Every person who works in the school is aware of the behavioral expectations and works to ensure students are consistently getting the same message, regardless of the setting they are in or the adult they come in contact with.
  • Individual support is provided for students not responding to the school- wide system. Our school has a system for developing plans for individual students who may have a difficult time and need more support in a school setting. Parents will be notified if their child is in need of the above support(s)

Active support by all stakeholders is imperative. The entire school community is needed in order to make this system successful. Our new behavior system is a building-wide behavior program for establishing a positive school culture.

School Information


  • Every student is REQUIRED to read at least 30 minutes every night. Hardy elementary currently has a homework practice in place that only consist of nightly reading. This is the homework assignment on most nights from teachers.   • We are always looking for volunteers to read to our kindergarten and first grade students. If you are interested in volunteering and reading with our students, please contact Linda Henk @ lhenk@iwcs.k12.va.us
  • Reading every day is very important for your child’s continued growth. Children that read for at least 1 hour a day will grow more than 2 years during the school year. Please encourage your child to read for at least 30 minutes (2 steps) a day. Click on the September edition of Building Readers for more information on how to help your child become a better reader.
