AUTHOR BEN MIKAELSEN VISITS BIDWELL JR.
On November 14th all seventh grade students in Chico Unified had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet internationally renowned author Ben Mikaelsen. Mr. Mikaelsen is the author of nearly a dozen novels, including Touching Spirit Bear, a coming of age novel about restorative justice and redemption. Students were able to meet the man whose real life experiences, challenges and triumphs inspired the characters in the novel they read at school. After his inspirational presentation, Ben met with many students to give autographs, take selfies, and answer probing questions students had formed during their class discussions.

THANKFUL FOR OUR BIDWELL WRITERS!
Mrs. Hansen is thankful for amazing writers. Check out Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving painting “Freedom from Want”. All eighth graders in English picked one of Norman Rockwell’s paintings and then used their skills and knowledge of the elements of fiction to tell the story of the painting. Students crafted dialogue and built suspense to explain in their mind, the story behind Rockwell’s work. Their stories were phenomenal. This Thanksgiving picture was a fun choice for many students to reflect on events that could happen surrounding a Thanksgiving meal. Keep up the awesome writing, Pioneers!

SCIENCE ROCKS!
Sixth graders are learning about the rock cycle in Ms. Harris' science class, answering the question, “What are continents?” Using starbursts, pressure and heat, students created and observed the process of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Learning is pretty sweet!
JOIN REMIND!
PIONEER SHOW THEIR GRATITUDE
Ms. Purl’s 8th grade English classes spent the week leading up to Thanksgiving watching inspirational videos and collaborating on what it means to be thankful. On Friday, each student wrote down a few reasons they are thankful and added these mementos to our gratitude wall. It's a beautiful reminder of all we are grateful for!

HMONG NEW YEAR
Our Multicultural Club Hmong Dancers performed a cultural dance for staff and students in celebration of the Hmong New Year. Hmong New Year celebrations frequently occur in November and December (traditionally at the end of the harvest season when all work is done), serving as a Thanksgiving holiday for the Hmong people. We were thankful to experience such a wonderful performance by our talented students.
UPWARD BOUND
Upward Bound Projects is having their open enrollment period from Oct. 1st through December 1st. Upward Bound is a program geared to help high school students reach their goals of going to a 4 year university. Want more info? Come to the Counseling Office and speak to a Counselor about it.
