PRINCIPAL - MR ANDREW KELLY
My question today is to ask, what are you seeking this Lenten season?
Jesus tells us that the one who seeks, finds; the one who asks, receives; to the one who knocks, the door is opened. When we reflect on a Lenten season that has been more meaningful for us than others, the common thread is that we had lower expectations for what we were seeking. If we started off with the idea that we needed to make major changes in our lives almost always we fall short of those objectives. But when we focus on little things that we can do to improve our life lasting change was much more likely to occur.
So during this Lenten season let us all reflect on an issue that concerns us greatly at this time in our life. The issue can be something about our personal life or it can be something about our perception of our communal lives. One way to start is to make little changes in our life that will address that larger problem.
LENT IN ACTION THIS WEEK
Support someone who is sick, or who you know is struggling in some way at this time.
Show your support for them either by visiting, phoning, writing or praying for them.
MR RAY PLANT
It is with great sadness that I announce Mr Ray Plant, our garden and maintenance manager for nine years has decided he needs to retire. Ray has worked tirelessly demonstrating exemplary dedication to ensure our school always looked so well presented every morning and secure each evening. Ray always went above and beyond for anybody in our school and for this, we are truly grateful for the wonderful service you have given to St Luke’s. Ray’s last day with us will be next Friday, 5 March where we will have a presentation at our assembly. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Ray! God bless.
A reminder to all children in McSweeney, to celebrate our House Day, this Wednesday, 3 March. You will be having an early lunch, an extra 10mins in the covered area before lunch and also receiving an icy pole.
Personal Responsibility ~ School Uniform: We understand that often weekends are filled with special occasions when girls often wear nail polish and make up. We ask that this is removed before the next school day. The correct coloured hair scrunchies are required to be worn, please. We also remind students that the correct shoes are required when wearing the St Luke’s school or sport uniform. For further clarification on the school uniform please visit our website: https://www.stlukeswoodvale.wa.edu.au/uniforms
Parent Interviews will be held during Holy Week of this term. Our school will be closing early at 12.00 pm on Monday, 29 March to help facilitate these meetings. Information about how to book an interview time will be mentioned in a newsletter shortly. I encourage all parents to select a time and meet with their child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress. It is very important that all parents make time to meet with the class teacher to ensure the school and home continue the important partnership of jointly working together for the well-being of the child. The only way we can do this is by talking together, working together and consistently supporting the children to grow in their love of learning and in their love of life. I ask you to ensure that you are working in partnership with your class teacher for the well-being and development of your child. If any child cannot be picked up by 12pm, we will have designated areas where children will be supervised by specialist teaching staff until the normal pick-up times. You are very welcome to collect your child after your interview time if it is before 2.40 for Kindy and Pre Primary and 2.55pm for Years 1-6.

Teacher Professional Development – Science of Reading: Next Tuesday, our staff will be involved in a PD day on the Science of Reading. This will be facilitated by Jenny Baker, a Dyslexia Speld Foundation speech pathologist from Fremantle.
The term “science of reading” refers to the research that reading experts, especially cognitive scientists, have conducted on how we learn to read. This body of knowledge, over twenty years in the making, has helped debunk older methods of reading instruction that were based on tradition and observation, not evidence.
Already St Luke’s staff have embedded some practices that are aligned with the Science of Reading such as the Heggerty literacy program, Diana Rigg Synthetics program, and the Mini Lit and Mac Lit programs within the Support classes, just to name a few. We aim to develop a 2 year implementation plan, embedding best practice related to the Science of Reading.
Maintenance over the School Holidays: We were extremely fortunate to complete a number of maintenance works over the Christmas holidays. These included:
Painting to the external walls of the buildings.
Painting on the internal walls of the Pre-primary room.
Gutter cleaning and gutter repairs.
Verandah sheeting was replaced adjacent to the chicken pen.
Additional air conditioners fitted in the support rooms, kindy and pre-primary rooms.
IT Cabling to the junior block to further enhance our WIFI networking.
HSS Security, additional cameras have been installed in the junior block and the Performing Arts Centre.
TVs: 10 new 75 inch interactive TV’s have replaced the existing TVs that were in Kindy to Year 2 classrooms and the Library.
Kindy Kitchen renovation including a brand new oven and flooring throughout
Flag poles to the front entrance of the school
Solar Panels replaced
We thank the School Advisory Council for endorsing these enhancements to the school.
Fire Drill: Yesterday, we held a fire drill and all staff and students are to be congratulated with the manner in which they approached it. All students were compliant and we all escaped in good form!
Lockdown Drill: Next week, we will complete our Lockdown drill which is part of our Crisis Management Policy. Please click on the link to view our current policy which is available on our school website: St Luke's Catholic Primary School - Crisis Management Policy

ICT Agreements: Have you seen our ICT agreements? Do you know where you and your child stand with regards to technology use at St Luke’s? If you are unsure, please head to our school website and have a look under our Communications / policies and handbooks tab: ww.stlukeswoodvale.wa.edu.au
Cyber Safety Parent Information Evening: We have acknowledged feedback from our parent community and have organised a Cyber Safety and Digital Wellbeing information session for not only our parents but also our student community. This is a very positive step forward for St Luke’s as we are working with a BYOD model that, at times, may present challenges for our community. We will confirm dates and times and alert you to these as soon as possible. WATCH THIS SPACE…
Kiss and Ride: A big thank you to all our fabulous families for your efforts with the drive through / pick-up each afternoon this week. It has been wonderful to see so many families displaying their name signs. We have had a lot of spot prizes being passed through car windows this week! There are still plenty more, so please let us know if you require a new name sign for your car. It really helps us to speed up the pick-up process. THANK YOU!

Gardens: all of the class garden beds have been planted with seedlings during the Science lessons and we are now eagerly watching them grow. The Year 4 classes are not only growing their own bean seeds for Biological Science, but last week we looked at the role of pollinators with our food. One in every 3 mouthfuls of food is due to the role of a pollinator. Recently Woolworths has been doing the seed giveaway again and it is great to see all parts of this giveaway can be used or broken down once used. We hope everyone who is growing one at home is enjoying seeing the life cycle of a plant and that if there are any not being grown, we would love for them to be donated to the school so that we can grow them.

SPORT NEWS - MR ROB NOSEDA
Swimming Carnival - 12 March - Craigie Leisure Centre (Years 4,5 & 6)
Interschool Carnival - 25 March - Arena Joondalup (Years 4,5 & 6)
The swimming Carnival is fast approaching and hopefully the children are doing lots of practise.
I am still chasing some more parent helpers for the carnival so please let me know as soon as possible if you can help.
Our Carnival has no spectator number restrictions, but the Interschool Carnival has a severe limit, 100 only in total, so as PE Teachers we have decided as a group to only allow parent helpers to attend. It would be impossible to decide which 12 people can attend as spectators
This is something we must live with currently.
The good news is we have lots of space and jobs at Craigie.

Last year we had high hopes to have a Bogan Bingo Night but sadly due to everything the event did not go ahead. This night would be for St Luke’s parents/caregivers and 18+ guests with funds going towards our P & F. We would still really love to have this in 2021 and are looking for a team of people to jump on board and help in running the night. Professional bogans have been arranged to run the actual bingo it just requires amateur bogans to organise the rest. Please email parentsstlukes@outlook.com if you are keen!
St Luke’s Playgroup will be up and running very soon. To get up to date information regarding this amazing group please join our Facebook page Playgroup at St Luke’s CPS Woodvale.
Finally, with the new date announced for Evening on the Green being 19th March, tickets can now be purchased via the Flexischools app. The tickets online cost $25 and are available until the 17th March. We really hope you can join us for a great night.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account, they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in with their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Thursday, 8:10 – 8:30am, outside the school library in the undercover area. Parents accompanying their children will need to practise social distancing.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please come to have a chat or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
Can you volunteer? We need your help with the School Banking program!
The program requires volunteers to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same time each week and will only take a small amount of your time.
If you are free between 8:00-8:30am Thursday mornings, once a month or so and interested in volunteering for this program, please contact Amelia Gunner (meals17@hotmail.com).
