Dorm Wireless Installation
860 Access Point later...
While you were away
While the students and faculty were on summer break, Harding Telecommunication Services was hard at work installing Wireless Access in all of the dorms. You can see the Access Points we used here and a brief explanation as to why we chose them and the advantages they provide.
The Front of the Access Point
This is the Access Point we used. Manufactured by Ruckus, these APs offer a compact design that fit almost anywhere.
The Back of the Access Point
This AP is designed to mount to existing behind-the-wall boxes. This proves advantageous in that the AP will mount flush to the wall preventing accidental damage to the cabling. Before mounting the AP to the wall box, simply plug in an ethernet cable from the jack to the appropriate port on the back.
The Bottom of the Access Point
This AP is unique in that it acts as a network switch. When the net jack is plugged into the PoE port this AP will distribute the Wireless signal while also providing four 'hard line' ports on the bottom to patch into. There is also a 'pass through' port if there is a signal that needs to bypass the AP entirely such as a phone.
Graphic Description
The above graphic is a basic diagram showing how we utilize the Access Points in each dorm. We installed the APs in alternating rooms down the hall and offset them from the floor above and/or below it so that if a room didn't have an AP it could have up to five other APs providing coverage.
