An Update from the Superintendent's Office - August 2021

Welcome Back!

It is hard to believe that this summer is at an end, as we now look forward to the new and exciting 2021-2022 school year! We have spent the summer preparing for the return of students and we eagerly await the first day of school on August 12, 2021. It is going to be an incredible year of learning and opportunity!

While I have served as the Elementary Principal of Oakland-Craig for the past 7 years, I am thrilled to begin this school year as your Superintendent. I think the world of all of you and consider myself so fortunate to be a member of this school community. When I look at the landscape ahead, I see the students, staff, and community at the forefront and I cannot imagine myself anywhere else. I feel truly blessed to raise my children here.

Thanks to our talented staff, a tremendous amount of work has occurred since we left in May. A wide range of professional development and planning was completed. In fact, our district has committed to the work of Professional Learning Communities. During a 3 day training, 35 of our elementary and secondary staff attended a variety of workshops designed to help schools embrace high levels of learning for all students. In addition, several staff members at the elementary spent their summer learning about the science of reading while many at the secondary level began their work on the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process, which will provide targeted support to our students both academically and behaviorally.

There was also extensive facilities work completed this summer. In our Jr./Sr. High building we have refinished the gym floor, painted the locker rooms, and remodeled the bathrooms near the gym. We have also moved the Superintendent and Business Manager offices to the hallway near the newly remodeled bathrooms and Mrs. Anderson and Ms. Ingram's special education classrooms have moved to the old Superintendent/Business Manager offices. The new gym also looks quite different. The gym floor has been sanded down and repainted for a fresh new look. In addition, the rock wall and old mats have been removed and replaced. I am thankful for a dedicated staff who work hard day in and day out to ensure that the coming school year is filled with learning, engagement, and success for our students.

Many of you are probably wondering what this upcoming school year will look like. Our hope is that things will be back to normal; however, the direction we get from the CDC and health department changes frequently. We will adjust our Return to Learn Plan as needed based on the updates we receive from the CDC and health department. Again, our goal is to move forward as we would any other school year. We appreciate your support and understanding as we navigate through what we hope is the end of this pandemic.

While I am sorry to see the warm summer days come to a close, I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone on August 12, the start of a bright new school year. On behalf of myself, the staff, and the Board of Education, we wish the OC community a year filled with opportunity, growth, and success!
