Presenter's Bio
Will Collins graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, a school that replaces science and math with economics and research methods. He selected the school’s lone major that made it possible to study art, called Culture & Politics, and designed a concentration in film, media, and semiotics. He’s from rural North Carolina and he’s taught English in rural Turkey. Some of his past work experience includes helping to build sets for an experiential marketing workshop in NYC and producing videos for an advertising firm.
Abstract:
The intention of this lecture is to outline some of the key themes of Postmodern literature, primarily by differentiating it from Modern literature. The first half is entitled ‘The Broth’ and it will focus on the setting that Postmodern literature was birthed from. The Atomic Age of Post-World War II and the resting majesty of the Expat Writers will serve as the primary discussion. The second half will be called ‘Infinite Jest,’ both the title of a seminal work in Postmodern literature by David Foster Wallace, and a suggestion that the concept of Postmodernism is itself a never-ending joke. The closing section will attempt to conceive of some notion of what Postmodernism is, what it does, and consider some of its key figures, such as Vladimir Nabokov, Jorge Luis Borges, and Thomas Pynchon.
4 to 4.45 pm: "The Broth"
