Class Rings, Caps and Gowns, Announcements

Representatives from Balfour will be here Tuesday, March 18th and Wednesday, March 19th during lunch. Balfour will be taking class ring orders for the sophomores and juniors and will be taking cap and gown and announcement orders and payments for the seniors . The representatives will also be available to answer any questions students or parents may have. Seniors may still order announcements at www.balfour.com . Prom Announcements

Prom money is due March 14th. The cost is $60 per person. You may give your money to Mrs. Daniel or Mrs. Bell.


Prom Attire Guidelines:

Girls Dress Code:

1. Excessive cleavage is not allowed.

2. Dress may be backless as long as it is not cut below the waist.

3. Navel may not be exposed.

4. No pinning will be allowed as an alteration for a dress if, without the pinning, the dress does not meet dress code.

5. Dress should not be excessively short or pulled up when dancing.


Boys Dress Code:

1. Suits or tuxedos should be worn.

2. Shirts must be buttoned up to the second button from the collar.

3. Pants should fit properly on the hip and not sag below the waistline.

HGHS has a new phone number! Our main phone number has changed to 256-851-3220 and our fax is now 256-851-3221.

The revision to next year’s calendar consists of four half-days for professional development (coded in purple). Please note the dates. Also, notice we will be out for President’s Day next year.

Seniors: The last work session to present skit or dance performances for Follies consideration is Friday from 4-6 in the old gym. Rehearsals for Follies begin Monday immediately after school in the old gym.

HGHS is so excited about going BYOT school-wide that we want to create a logo for our website to let everyone know! Since we have the most talented kids in Madison County, we're going to let you guys do it. If you can come up with a good design, email it to twray@madison.k12.al.us . Digital copies must be submitted in jpeg or PDF form, and paper copies need to be at least 5x5. Remember, these need to be your own designs! Logos are due by Monday, March 17th.

Registration materials for current 8th grade students will be distributed Monday, March 10th and Tuesday, March 11th. Students will receive their recommended core courses, a high school course catalog, and other pertinent information needed to create a four-year plan. Completed forms and plans are due Thursday, March 20th and Friday, March 21st. Please complete this process with your child and provide a parent signature on the final plan. Additional information can be found on the Hazel Green High School registration page.


Don't forget 2014 Yearbooks are still available but in limited quantities. Please see Mrs. Brady or a staff member today to purchase your yearbook and enjoy yearbook day on May 8. Cost is $65.

Any girl interested in trying out for football competition cheer is invited to attend tumbling classes with us at Huntsville Gymnastics on Thursday evenings.
This is open to any girl in 8th-11th grade. Cost is $12.50 per session with a one-month commitment required. Tryouts will be held March 31-April 4 in the Wooley Gym from 3:30 to 5:00 and are closed to the public. Spring is on the way, and our Learning Community will be spending more time outside. We are in need of used tennis rackets, tee ball equipment, or other sports equipment to use for their activities. To make a donation, contact kodom@madison.k12.al.us .

The ACT Plus Writing assessment will be given to juniors on April 23 during school. Students should be preparing for the test by using the ACT Online Prep website that all juniors received a personal user name and password to. Special Programs

Motlow College ACT Test-Prep - Class will meet 4 Tuesdays: March 13, (skip March 20), 27, April 3, and 10, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. $60 registration; check made payable to Motlow State Community College. Students will need to purchase a textbook the first night of class. Textbooks will be available for sale ONLY the first night. Price of textbook:$30.95. Student Writers:
Due to misinformation posted on Huntsville Literary Association's website (www.hlahsv.org) about the closing date for the high school writing competition, HLA has decided to extend the deadline for submitting short stories, poem, and artwork to Monday, March 24. HLA sincerely apologizes for any difficulties this may have caused students wishing to enter the contest.


Challenge Leadership Program Class 20
will host two sessions again this Summer:

June 23 - June 25, 2014 - 9th and 10th grade program
July 21 - July 25, 2014 - 11th and 12th grade program

Challenge was designed to create youth ambassadors for the Huntsville/Madison County community. The Challenge program educates our youth on the successes and challenges in education, healthcare, government, public safety, quality of life and human services by participating in hands-on activities and program day speakers. West Point's Summer Leaders Experience
(SLE) applications will be open to juniors through April 11th. SLE is a great week of academic, military, and physical excellence. The program consists of daily morning physical training, academic classes, afternoon sports, a day of military training, administration of the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), a West Point tour, and social functions. The academic program features workshops and class samplings from the Academy's curriculum. All participants are housed in the cadet barracks and meals are in the Cadet Mess. US Naval Academy Summer Programs
- Summer STEM program is designed for rising 8th-11th graders who are interested in pursuing education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. The Summer Seminar program, designed for rising 12th graders, gives students the opportunity to find out if they have what it takes to be a midshipmen. Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week – Recognition for students who not only excel as athletes but also excel in the classroom and in the community. Applicants must be seniors with at least a 3.5 GPA and include a photo with the application. Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the Athletes of the Week to receive a $1000 scholarship. Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend
- Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.

1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.

2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.

3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.

Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors students on April 23 during school. First Priority/FCS
meets every Tuesday morning at 7: 20 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.

Recycle:
Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.


Reward Cards:
Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit:
Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
