Notes from the Gym
Our physical education program is up and “running” !. Fall intramurals have begun with 4th and 5th grade students enjoying mornings filled with multi-sports and soccer games.
Our backyard games unit culminated with a family fun night. Over 50 families attended with special thanks to Mrs. Nicole Cherney and Mrs. Jodi Marinich. For information on joining the LDS wellness council and helping our students be Donovan Strong contact Nicole Cherney at ncherney@me.com. The 4th and 5th grade students not only played our backyard games but have made videos to share with a particular school in Japan. Later in the school year, Japanese students will share their games with us!
The haunted gym has come to a close with excitement brewing in the hallways before the students entered. At each station students were given physical challenges such as graveyard bowling, rattling the bones of our resident skeleton “skelly bones”, and stomping the bats that fly overhead. “This is the most amazing place to be” said a kindergarten student as the left the gym!
Our next school wide event will be our turkey trot on Wednesday, November 27. This event is a community and wellness council fundraiser. Students along with other family members, ‘trot” around a designated path while promoting fitness and helping others More information will follow shortly.
A reminder to check your child’s physical education schedule so your child is prepared to participate when it is their day to come to the gym. Thanks to the PTO we do have a sneaker library just in case.

News from 4th Grade
Fourth graders have had a busy two months of school! Our Language Arts, Math and Science Units are in full swing. The students have been working hard on their multiplication strategies and are really excited to begin learning about multiplying double-digit numbers! They’ve also been playing a game in Number Corner called “Race to the Millions” this month, which has them making numbers using place value with digits they spin. We still don’t know yet which teams will have the larger number. We will find out on Halloween!! Stay tuned!
In Language Arts students have been working hard on realistic fiction and personal narrative stories. They have added in meaningful dialogue, figurative language and inner thoughts and feelings to bring their small moments to life. The students are working on their first writing piece and are almost ready to publish! They have also read intensely, The Tiger Rising; learning about story structure, character traits, themes, and how these can also relate to their writing. They have begun reading groups and word work where they meet in flexible groups based on interest and ability.
In Science, students created a plant that can adapt to a particular biome of their choice. It was fun to see their creativity shine through on this hands on activity. We are now moving on to our energy unit, learning about different forms of energy and how it is transferred. This will culminate in students applying their understanding by creating their very own Rube Goldberg machine! It has certainly been a fun filled, busy two months of school!
