News from this week
Dear Parents,
It has been another wonderful week in 4th grade. The students are settling into our regular routines. We also have a new behavior initiative this year. Please scroll down for more information about PBIS!
If your child is interested for running for student council the forms are due on Tuesday. No late applications can be accepted. Students will give speeches on August 23rd.
The SS daily grade on Map Skills is pushed back to Monday. Please have your child review their Map Skills in their Social Studies notebook.
If your child has math instruction solely with me, a daily grade is being sent home in their Friday Folder. Most students did very well. If your child struggled please know that we will continue to work in small groups to master skills. I have met with all of the students to help them understand their mistakes, and I will continue to work on these skills over the next few weeks and months.
I have emphasized to the students how important it is to know their multiplication and division facts. Many of the students have forgotten them over the summer, and our next 2 units in Math will be on 2x2 Multiplication and long Division. If the students do not know their Math facts easily, they will most likely not do well on these units. There are so many apps and online games for your child to use along with old fashion flash cards. I have several practice sites on my eClass page. Please make sure your child practices these facts nightly.
I believe our first official reading logs will be sent home on Monday. They are not due until Monday, August 27th. Each student is required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Please be sure to sign the reading log before returning it to school. Reading logs can be submitted electronically through the media center link on the Gwin Oaks home page. If you choose to send the reading log electronically please send me an e-mail to let me know as I do not see that list until Wednesday. Reading logs are considered weekly homework and all students are required to complete them.
Sight word homework is sent home every Monday and is not due until Friday. We have approximately 3 daily grades on the sight words per month. Students are shown a word spelled 4 different ways. They are required to circle the word spelled correctly. I will never dictate the words and expect the students to write them from memory. I also have students copy down their homework for the week every Monday Morning. I may have them add/change an item from time to time. I know many students have after school activities, so I feel this gives them a chance to work ahead if they need to.
If you have not yet already signed the consent for your child to participate in the HealthMPowers study, please do so as soon as you can. I sent an email on Thursday with directions on how to do it on www.mypaymentsplus.com. I am also sending a paper copy home to those who have not yet signed up. All consents are due by Monday.
If you have not yet signed up for Remind, please make sure to do so. I like to use this service to let parents know about important information about our class, including upcoming tests and the weekly newsletter. You can text the code: @stoffle18 to the number 81010.
Please look through your child's Friday Folder. The behavior sheet needs to be signed and returned on Monday each week.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Stoffle

What is PBIS?
Parents,
We have an exciting school wide initiative for the 2018-2019 school year! Gwin Oaks Elementary School is a PBIS School.
What is PBIS?
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions Support) is a framework that will give Gwin Oaks Elementary School unified school expectations. Similar to the Gwin Oaks Elementary School Handbook, these rules will define our expectations for behavior in our school. You will see these expectations posted throughout the school and your child will be learning them during his or her first days at school. Our unified school expectations, found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school, are as follows:
Be Ready
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
As part of our PBIS process, teachers and other staff members use the discipline data we accumulate to develop evidence-based practices to increase student learning and decrease classroom disruptions. We will have incentives to encourage students to adopt the expectations in a positive manner. We look forward to sharing more with you and your student for the 2018-2019 school year.
