3rd Grade Reading Law
On October 6, 2016, Michigan became the 37th state to adopt third grade reading legislation when Governor Rick Snyder signed Public Act 306 into law. Public Act 306 of 2016 (now referred to as MCL 380.1280f) requires all 3rd Grade students not scoring proficient on the 3rd Grade state summative assessment be retained. This legislation took effect immediately and this year's 1st grade students will be the first cohort of students impacted by the retention aspects of the law in 2019-20.
Each child will have a reading plan. Your child’s teacher and other school staff will work with your child to find where he or she needs support and create a plan to support your child.
The plan will include:
- Extra instruction or support in areas of need
- Ongoing progress checks
- At home reading plan (20 minutes of reading outside of the school day)
- Your child may be encouraged to participate in summer reading programs
Extra support in your child’s individualized reading plan will occur in small group or one-on-one instruction during the school day. Your child will not miss regular reading instruction. Based on this law, beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, 3rd graders must score less than one year behind on state reading assessments in order to be promoted to 4th grade. 3rd graders can also be promoted to 4th grade if they prove to be at grade level through an alternate assessment or a portfolio of work.
If you are notified that your child may be retained, you have the right to meet with school officials and request an exemption. The district superintendent will make the final decision. More details and optional informational meetings will be coming soon!
Attendance Awareness
Excused and unexcused absences easily add up to too much time lost in the classroom.
- Students are at risk academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days. Once too many absences have occurred, they can affect learning, regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused.
- Sporadic, not just consecutive, absences matter. Before you know it – just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.
- Avoid unnecessary absences. Some absences are unavoidable. Occasionally, children get sick and need to stay home. What is important is getting children to school as often as possible.
Michigan Teacher of the Year!
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is asking educators, administrators, students, and parents to help it find the next Michigan Teacher of the Year (MTOY). The Michigan Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Meemic Foundation, recognizes outstanding educational leaders across Michigan for their work to elevate the teaching profession.
Michigan Teachers of the Year have been recognized since 1952. This Michigan honor is part of the preeminent state- and nationally-recognized teacher recognition program in states across the country.
“Great teachers are found in every school in our state,” said State Superintendent Brian Whiston. “The Michigan Teacher of the Year program has honored outstanding Michigan educators for decades and is the one enduring tribute to this important profession.”
MDE’s online nomination form is open until Friday, October 20 at 11:59 p.m., for people to nominate a teacher or teachers whom they feel are exceptional educators and have made substantial contributions to their profession.

Costume Guidelines
Here are some guidelines to help you in the process of choosing a Halloween costume:
The costume should be easy for the student to change into without help
Students may dress up but we will not allow any bloody, violent or inappropriate costumes.
We cannot allow any unsafe or scary masks (that cover the eyes, nose, and mouth) to be worn. Masks, goggles, or glasses that do not cover the nose or mouth are ok to wear.
No fake weapons are allowed as part of any costume.
Students may use slight make-up (not too elaborate or time-consuming to apply); and again, please make sure it is appropriate.
Costumes should be able to fit in a backpack or bag so that the student can carry it easily and safely on the bus.

Lice Prevention!
We all need to take preventative measures and educate ourselves and our children on how to prevent the spread of lice. Children should not share combs, hats (including ball caps at sporting events), pillows (at sleepovers), or coats/jackets (especially with hoods).
Children should not 'touch heads' while sitting close to a friend. Children/girls with long hair can keep it pulled back in a ponytail or braids, and spritzed with hairspray and/or tea tree oil. Please also refer to the lice prevention & treatment information found on our website (click the link below):

Please Help Prevent the Spread of Sickness, Head Lice, etc...
Parents: We have had several reported cases of Colds with fevers over the past few weeks. The best way to prevent the spread of sickness, communicable diseases, or issues such as head lice is to take preventative steps at home prior to sending your child to school. Please also contact the office right away to let us know of any sickness or confirmed case of lice that your child may have. For more ‘health’ related information, please visit the State Road website and select “Student Health Info” under the Information Tab. Thank you!
Please visit the "Student Health Information" section of our website (link below) for more information!
