Howdy Hounds!
This week, we welcomed our staff back for the 21-22 school year. It has been a fantastic few days of professional development and planning for our students' return! We hope our families have had a restful summer and that are students are as excited to come back as we are!
As many of you know, our school will be hosting the Morgan Elementary students and staff for the fall semester. We feel that this is a unique opportunity for collaboration and togetherness before they make their way to their new campus in the spring. Mr. Gibson and I have been working all summer to prepare for a smooth transition for our Hounds and Panthers. As we get closer to the first day of school, we wanted to take some time to share some reminders and updates with our families.
Please remember that Pre-K and Kindergarten Orientation is Thursday, August 12 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the Huggins cafeteria. This is for parents of incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten students for both Huggins and Morgan, and it will serve as a time for our teachers to review beginning of year procedures with families. Please note that this event is for parents only.
Additionally, please mark your calendars for Morgan’s Meet the Teacher on Tuesday, August 17 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Huggins’ Meet the Teacher on Thursday, August 19 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. We strongly encourage all families to come to Meet the Teacher!
As you know, we are expecting lots of students on the Huggins campus during the fall semester. Due to our unique situation, there are several logistical decisions that we have had to make in the best interest of our students and community. Parking is extremely limited at Huggins Elementary, and unfortunately the roads surrounding the school are not conducive to parking. Because of this, only parents of Pre-K and Kindergarten students will be permitted to park and walk their child in for the first day of school. In order to make room, our staff will be parking at the secondary campuses and will be shuttled to our building on the first day. This decision was made after collaborating with our District and city law enforcement. If the Pre-K or Kindergarten student has an older sibling, they may walk into the building with their parent, but parents will not be permitted to visit the classrooms of first through fifth grade. Pre-K and Kindergarten parents will receive a parking pass at Meet the Teacher. Please note that parents will need to bring the parking pass to their child's teacher on the first day of school. Starting Tuesday, August 24th, all students will need to utilize the bus, daycare, or car rider drop off in the morning.
We want to encourage all families to come to Meet the Teacher and use that time to take photos and capture memories. Our parent organizations will even have photo booths set up to add to the fun! At Meet the Teacher, each student will receive three days’ worth of labels. The labels will identify if the student is a Huggins Hound or a Morgan Panther and will also include their name and teacher’s name. We are asking that each student wear a label on the first three days of school so that we can best guide them to their classrooms.
Please note that for the fall semester, we will not be permitting visitors at lunch. This is due to limited space in our cafeteria. Parents that wish to bring their child lunch may drop it off in the front office. We will look forward to welcoming lunch visitors during the spring semester!
We appreciate your understanding as we plan for the 2021-2022 school year. We are looking forward to an amazing year, and we are counting down the days until we see our Hounds and Panthers!
*Parents- please also be sure to mark your calendars for Curriculum Night/Orientation. Huggins Curriculum Night is Thursday, September 9 with sessions at 5:00 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Morgan’s Curriculum Night/Orientation is Thursday, September 1 with sessions at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Sincerely,
Bethany Cunningham
Principal

School Meals...
Lamar CISD has announced its participation in the Seamless Summer Option for the 2021-2022 school year, offering healthy meals every school day to all students at no cost.
Typically, a student’s household must meet income eligibility requirements to qualify for free or reduced-price meals. However, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued guidance that allows schools to offer meals to all students at no cost for the 2021-2022 school year.
While no application or eligibility determination is required for our students to receive free meals this school year, income eligibility requirements will likely resume in the 2022-2023 school year.
Extra lunch entrees and a la carte items are not included with the no cost meals.
