Brentwood is Recognized as Four Star School by Department of Education for 2013-2014
The Indiana Department of Education released their list of 2013-2014 Four Star Schools - and Brentwood Elementary is once again represents Plainfield Schools on this list! This year the list is comprised out of 281 out of 2,068 eligible schools in Indiana.
The eligibility to make Four Star requires that a school be in the 75th percentile or above in two calculations:
1. the combined percentage of students in each grade passing the ISTEP English and Math tests;
2. percentage of individual students in each grade that passed both tests.
Each grade is calculated separately and the school must meet the 75th percentile in both categories in all grades tested.
Additionally, a qualifying school must have earned an "A" in the state's accountability system and be accredited by the Indiana Department of Education.

Note From the Principal...
Dear Brentwood Families,
I just want to share a personal thank you to the efforts of our PTO this week during staff appreciation. We were pampered and surprised all week long with meals, treats, notes, and so much more!
We are very blessed to have a wonderful group of parents expressing their thanks to the fantastic staff at Brentwood Elementary. We appreciate you and thank you for making all of us feel appreciated.
Please join us at our last PTO meeting on Monday, May 18th at 6:30 if you're interested in finding out more about our wonderful PTO!
Have a great weekend,
Ms. Vamos
Students of the Week
Cold as Ice Experiment Warms 4th Grade Students
It was fun to hear the students put their hands in the water and then read the thermometer after taking it out of the fur and blubber, “No way! It can't be that warm!” was heard several times.
Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Jennifer Goodin, Music & Math Teacher
She grew up in Oolitic, Indiana (which is the Limestone capital of the world!) and graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School. She and her husband have to children, Ella is 7 and in second grade; Carter is 10 and in 4th grade. Their family also has a dog, Colt, who is her son's best friend and goes everywhere with him! "My kids put him in a stroller and take him on walks around our neighborhood."
Some of Mrs. Goodin's Faves:
Color ~ Blue
Movie ~ Shawshank Redemption
TV Show ~ Anything on HGTV
Book ~ To Kill a Mockingbird
Music ~ "I love all types of music depending on my mood"
Flower ~ Hydrangeas
Restaurant ~ Cheesecake Factory
Candy ~ Dark chocolate covered almonds
When she is not at Brentwood, Mrs. Goodin and her family enjoy riding their bikes through the Plainfield trail system and she can't wait until she can start working outside in her yard!
She says that visiting Ground Zero after 9/11 was the most memorable place she has been. "After college, my friends and I went to New York City. It was less than a year after 9/11, so to see Ground Zero at that time and all the memorials there, still stays with me. I would like to go back now that the area has been reconstructed."
She doesn't have a particular student/teacher moment that stands out more than another, but says her favorite MOMENTS are when "you see students who are struggling NOT give up. They continue to work, ask questions, and figure out what they are doing. Then, to see their smiles when they are rewarded for all their hard work is one of my favorite parts of teaching."
As a parent and teacher, what advice do you have for parents on how they can be involved in their child’s education? "Remember learning is all around us. Always take the time to teach and answer questions. As a parent myself, I know I get a lot of questions, and I always try to answer them, or most of them :), because it is how they learn. There are teachable moments in everything we do. Don't let those moments pass without taking advantage of them!"
Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Nakia Slone says, "Jennifer is a wonderful person to work with. She is a great team player and collaborator. Jennifer always has great ideas to pass along to fellow teachers and students."

Value of the Month Student ~ March ~ "Reliability"
Mrs. Sutton writes, "I can always count on Lily to give her best effort. Even when faced with a difficult task, I know Lily is always going to do her very best. I can depend on her to work carefully and do the very best job she can do. I can also count on her to have a good attitude. She never complains, she just gets the job done. Finally, I can always rely on Lily to be a kind, caring person. She is considerate of her classmates and treats everyone with respect. Lily is a wonderful student to teach because I can rely on her to show excellence in her attitude and her effort. She is really an amazing person!"

Transportation & Dismissal Info
All car riders arriving in the morning should be dropped off in our car rider lane NOT in our Visitor Parking lot. This ensures they are not crossing over any traffic. If you child is being dropped off late an adult must come into the office with them to sign them in.
If your child rides the bus to school and will be eating breakfast in the cafeteria please talk to them about going straight to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. This will give them the most time to eat a healthy breakfast possible.
Dismissal Changes:
- If you need to change your child's dismissal instructions the best way to do this is to send a signed note into your child's teacher.
- If this is impossible please call the office NO LATER THAN 3:00 p.m. to ensure the dismissal change gets to your child's teacher in a timely matter.
Transportation:
If you are permanently changing how your child goes home or if you move please notify our office at 317-839-4802, as well as Transportation at 317-838-3632, and submit a new Transportation Form to the office.
