Anne Marie's Law
Through the end of the 1st semester, the BHMS mental health team will be presenting to students on Ann Marie’s Law. Ann Marie’s Law, or Illinois Public Act 99-443, requires that Illinois public schools provide depression and suicide prevention and awareness education to students from kindergarten through 12th grades. The education is to increase student awareness of depression and to teach students ways to seek assistance for themselves or a friend in need. The BHMS curriculum covers the topics: what is depression, warning signs of self-harm and suicidal ideation, what to report, how to report, coping skills, and outside resources. The materials and curriculum are differentiated for students based off of grade level and disability.
5th grade presentations will be on: 12/12/17
6th grade presentations will be on: 12/5/17 & 12/7/17
7th grade presentations will be on: 12/4/17 & 12/5/17
8th grade presentations will be on: 11/27/17 & 11/29/17
If you have any questions or concerns about these presentations, please contact one of BHMS’ mental health team members. Their contact information can be found on their website: mentalhealthbhms.weebly.com

Eighth Grade and Graduation Ceremony Participation
As we approach the end of our 2nd quarter, we wanted to make sure that you are aware of the Graduation Ceremony Participation policy that is presented in the Parent/Student Handbook. The policy reads as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GRADUATION CEREMONY PARTICIPATION-MIDDLE SCHOOL In order to participate in the Graduation Ceremony at Big Hollow Middle School, 8th Grade students must be in compliance with the Academic Point System. Students must have 10 or less accumulated points based upon the following criteria: Any F= 1 Academic Point-Calculated just for 8th Grade year at the end of Students who accumulate more than 10 Academic Points will not be allowed to participate in the ceremonies Any student passing all classes in any of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th nine week terms is eligible to erase two accumulated Academic Points that were previously accumulated Example: If a student gets 4 F’s during the 1st quarter he/she will have accumulated 4 Academic Points. However, if he/she passes all of his/her classes the next quarter, he/she can remove 2 Academic Points from his/her total. This gives incentive for a student who may have exceeded the 10 points to work hard and earn some back in order to participate in the ceremony. If the student passes all classes 3rd quarter, they will have an additional 2 points removed. This system does not determine whether or not a student will be retained and/or receive a diploma. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We will continue to support your child throughout the year, however, please review your child's report card in light of this policy. If your child has begun accumulating these negative academic points, please make sure he/she understands the system and how he/she can avoid the accumulation of further points. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any member of the 8th Grade team of teachers. Thank you.
