General Information About WINDS!

Winds- what comes to mind when you think wind?

The stuff that blows in the air and gets you cold! or IS IT the air?

The FORCE!?

The answer is... NEITHER!

Wind is the movement of air from areas of high pressure to the areas of low pressure! :D

MORE BOUT' WINDS

You can measure wind speed with an anemometer!


VOCABULARY!:

Anemometer;a device that has three or four cups that spin on a pole;used to measure wind speed!

LOCAL WINDS! What's that about?

Sea breeze- A wind that blows from a body of water towards land.

Land breeze- A wind that blows from land towards a body of water.

GLOBAL WINDS! Cool, it's global!

Global winds- are winds that travel over a large area. LIKE THE GLOBE!


Global winds in the Southern hemisphere- Turn to the right

GLobal winds in the Northern hemisphere- Turn to the left

ALL THE GLOBAL WINDS UNITE!!!

Doldrums- These winds are at the equator (0' Latitude) and they are very weak.


Horse Latitudes- These winds are at 30' north and south latitude, and are very weak.


Trade winds- These winds lie in between 0' and 30' latitude VERY strong winds used for trading goods from around the country by sailors.


Jet stream- Is a band of very strong winds in the upper troposphere. Airplanes use these to travel while saving fuel! WIN-WIN!!


Prevailing Westerlies- These winds lie between 30' and 60' north and south latitude and blow from the west


Polar Easterlies- These winds blow from the north and south pole
