East Elementary
September 2022
Welcome to East!
This year at East, we will continue to build a strong professional learning community. We will live our mission each day, and work hard to make our vision a reality.
Mission: At East Elementary we work together to create a supportive environment for high levels of learning for all.
Vision: At East Elementary, we envision a school that is focused on learning, collaboration, and results.
- Learning: Students take charge of their learning by setting goals so they understand the purpose of what they are learning.
- Collaboration: Collaboration is data driven with the purpose of assisting teammates to achieve whole team growth.
- Results: Students and staff are supported in the work they are doing to achieve common goals, strive for continuous improvement, and sustain the results that have already been achieved.
This year, we will develop our commitments, the behaviors and attitudes we commit to having as we move our school toward its mission and vision of ensuring high levels of learning for all students. In collaborative grade level teams, teachers will continue to plan, teach/assess, study the results, and then act. Four questions will guide our work to ensure high levels of learning for all: What do we expect all students to know and do? How will we know if they have learned it? How will we respond when they do not learn? How will we respond when they already know it? These questions are very important as we work to guarantee every student has mastered the essential standards for their grade level.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email or call. Here's to a great year!

Mrs. Criddle's Corner
Welcome to East Elementary! It’s been a pleasure getting to know your children these past few days. I wanted to take a minute and share a bit about myself. This is my 23rd year working in the Jackson R-2 School District, and I spent my first 7 years teaching third grade. I graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with my Bachelor, Masters, and Specialist Degrees.
My husband, Jamie, and I have been married for 23 years. We both went through the Jackson School District for grades K-12, and we love this community. We have 3 beautiful children, and are so proud that they attend school in this district. We have 15 year old twins, Austin and Addison, who are in tenth grade, and a 13 year old, Ryan, who is in eighth grade. I also have an identical twin sister who teaches at the Jackson Middle School. Many people tend to get us mixed up, so I try to always make parents and students aware of my double (By the way, I’m the pretty one). My younger sister works at the high school, and my parents are both retired educators. So, I guess you can say, teaching runs in our family.
I am looking forward to this school year and working with the children, teachers, staff and parents at East!
Shauna Criddle, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Moyer's Message
Hello East Families! My name is Jenny Moyers and this is my 12th year as an elementary school counselor. My husband, Tyson, is the district athletic director for the Cape Public School District, and we have two children, Josie and Moses, who are both students here at East Elementary.
As the school counselor, it is my responsibility to implement the Missouri School Comprehensive Counseling Program, which is designed to address the needs of all students by providing classroom lessons, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support. At the elementary level, classroom lessons are designed to promote academic, social/emotional, and career development. In all of my lessons, I strive to help students understand how the content can help them in all three of those areas not just now but also in the future. As I always tell the students, the work we do in Counseling isn't always hard, but it is always important for their development! For some students, individual plans are developed, such as Check-In/Check-Out, to help teach and reinforce specific skills that will help them be successful at school. Small groups, individual counseling, restorative practices, and crisis management are offered as responsive services for students that need extra support in various areas. I also collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to provide system support to ensure students’ needs are being met.
Family support is a vital part of the success of the school counseling program, so please contact me anytime by calling the school, emailing me at jmoyers@jr2mail.org, or filling out this online form. I also have a website that I will be adding resources to on various topics for parents and students.
This year I am excited to introduce my “co-counselor”, Opal! Opal has been trained to be a school therapy dog. Opal will always remain leashed and either at my side or on a cot while at school. She is not permitted to approach anyone without my permission. I am taking time this second week of school to teach students about what it will mean to have Opal at school and what they can do to help her be successful. (O - Only Mrs. Moyers gives Opal commands; P - Ask for permission to pet; A - Approach calmly with the back of your hand showing; L - Listen to directions)
Even with those protocols in place, I understand if you do not want your student to receive therapy dog services (classroom lessons, individual sessions, and petting in the hallway). If you do not want your student to receive services from Opal, please fill out this opt-out form. (If you have more than one student you want to opt-out, please fill out a separate form for each student.)
News from the Nurses
Welcome Back! Nurse Tosha and Nurse Angie are so happy to see everyone back at school! We hope everyone had a GREAT summer! There are a lot of things we need to cover in our first newsletter this year. Here it goes!
If your child is sick PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME. This is the number one way to stop the spread of germs. If the germs don’t come to school they can’t be shared. If your child has fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea they need to be home for 24 hours symptom free without medication. If your child has other symptoms of illness like cough, sore throat, runny nose/congestion we ask that you keep them home at least 24 hours and that symptoms are improving before returning to school. Furthermore, if new symptoms develop, your child may be sent home (for example- they had congestion but now at school they present with a new cough). If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us!
COVID: There is no longer a “covid coordinator”. Each school nurse is in charge of their building and right now we are only tracking positive cases. If your child would test positive by home test or through a dr’s office/clinic we ask that they stay home 5 days from when their symptoms started. (Day one is the first day of their symptoms). They can return to school on their day 6 if they have been 24 hours free of vomiting/diarrhea/fever (*without using medication for 24 hours to reduce fever). Also, their symptoms should be improving and no new symptoms developing when they return to school (loss of taste/smell can still be present). Please notify Nurse Tosha @tborgfield@jr2mail.org or Nurse Angie @aboss@jr2mail.org if your child would test positive.
FLU Shot Clinic (through the Cape County Health Department) will be October 20th. The permission form will be sent out to all students and ONLY those that return the form and payment will receive the FLU Vaccine. Watch for the permission form to be sent home the first-second week of October.
Dental Screenings will be on October 28th. More info will be in the October newsletter.
Vision Screenings will be starting the week of August 29th for Kindergarten, 1st, and 3rd Grades. Once vision screenings are completed hearing screenings will begin. If a student doesn’t pass a screening they will be re-screened, and the parent will be notified if a referral is sent home.
Let’s have a great year!!! We appreciate all of your help keeping our school safe and healthy!!!

RUN! MOVE! GO!
Whether it’s to avoid a vicious dog nipping at your heels, trim the waistline, or just to clear your head– the majority of folk can appreciate the value in running, moving, and getting started.
DID YOU KNOW… In September running, moving, and getting started is what PTO will be all about!
In lieu of the Otis Spunkmeier Cookie push of the past, this year’s Fall fundraiser will be a school-wide FUN RUN on Thursday, September 15th. Along with coordinating the run, APEX will teach daily leadership lessons starting next Tuesday, September 6th. More information on pledging and race-day specifics are coming soon. This fundraising platform has been very successful at other schools and we’re excited to try it here. We hope our East kiddos are ready to RUN!
We don’t care if parents skip, sprint, parachute in, or get pushed by a friend: we are seeking walk-ons and veterans to get involved. To make it that much easier we have created the QR code below. Simply scan this bad-boy to instantly view and sign up for opportunities throughout the year. Volunteers are what keep this organization moving and make so many extras at East a GO!
This month PTO meetings also get started on Tuesday, September 13th. We will meet in the library at 5:30pm. These meetings are a great place to meet So-And-So’s mom, learn about the school as a whole, voice an idea, ask a question, etc. Doors will open at 5:15 for cookies and saying hello before we formally kick-off promptly at 5:30pm. We know so many people are on the go these days and try to make these meetings as short as possible. Childcare will be provided.
In an effort to include parents who have evening activities they can’t move around, this year we will also be offering a “Coffee Catch-Up” at 8am on Wednesday, September 14th in the Office Conference Room. We will review information from the previous night’s meeting and hopefully run into some new faces.
