From the Desk of Mr. Roote
Now that things are sufficiently stirred and the intensity of the shaking is slowly increasing I thought I would close out the Reds Tale for this school year with a few offerings for how my life with Willow imitates our life with teenagers:
- Amazingly, Willow came to us with a good sleeping routine. She will typically operate in a busy state for an hour and then snooze for an hour. By 10:30 pm she is out cold and does not stir again until 6:00 am. Consider developing a predictable routine for end of year assessment preparations. When a non-routine event is to occur, let kids know. In fact, it would be beneficial to give your students a detailed agenda of what to expect for the rest of the school year.
- Willow started with us with a few imperfections. She was fighting one of about five parasite driven illnesses. However, we followed the recommendations of the vet and the breeder and she is in great shape now. Parents, with school counselors a close second are our best resources this time of year for determining the root cause and potential solutions for some challenging behavior. Be sure to reach out and follow their recommendations.
- At about 7:00 pm, consistently, Willow falls into what I will describe as a frenetic state. She will nip everything in her sight and will run like a deer across the yard and through the house. We standby as she does this, being sure to reinforce the correct behaviors just as we normally do, and after ten or so minutes she "comes to". Sure the pressure is on all of us to finish strong, however now is not the time to bang a gavel or breathe fire. Now is the time to default to the tone you typically carry among your students. Coaches model this behavior for us. When they fail to do so it is compelling to watch the reactions. Take Joe Girardi's antics over home plate a week or two ago. Not sure anyone remembers why he was at home plate, but most of us remember the he kicked dirt all over it.
- Willow has no clue how to bark yet. I anticipate that we are less than a week away from her figuring out how to use her voice. When she does, we will make certain not to lose focus on how she is speaking, but what she is speaking about. What are your students telling you they need to finish strong. Listen to them, reinforce their need with the data you have for the year?
From the Desk of Mr. Wagner
I did a training at our January faculty meeting regarding administering and proctoring the NYS Regents exams. As the administration of Regents is high stakes, I want to review some important information from the regulations.
Preparation of the examination room:
- Put a “Do Not Disturb” sign posted on the door;
- Have a clock visible to all students;
- Clear desks and shelves; and
- Cover or remove all instructional materials pertinent to subject area being tested
- The uniform admission deadlines are 10:00 am for the morning exam and 2:00 pm for the afternoon exam. This means that a student is not allowed to start an exam in the morning after 10:00 am and after 2:00 pm for an afternoon exam.
- Students are not allowed to have any electronics or any other materials not required for the test during the administration of the exam. Students should follow the same protocol as January and turn their device(s) in to the table set up outside the gym. I will read the electronics statement over the PA before each exam. If a student has a device on them during the exam, please contact an administrator.
- Students must use blue or black inked pen; a pencil is only used when they are making drawings or diagrams – Three exams in January were completed in pencil – please be sure that students are completing the exams in pen
- After the exam, please make sure that students sign the declaration on the bottom of the answer (bubble) sheet
Proctoring:
- Please make sure there is a 30:1 student-teacher ratio in the gym at all times and circulate regularly when proctoring.
Grading:
- All exams will be scored in-house. Department leaders will organize grading teams for each exam.
These are just some highlights. You received the power point titled Administering and Proctoring NYS Regents Examinations and a highlighted version of the NYS Regents Regulations via email, and were asked to review the documents and sign-off with Mrs. Tellier after you have read them.

Social Emotional Learning and the Plan for Excellence
With school based kindness and empathy initiatives trending all around us I thought I would start to showcase this work on a weekly basis. Below is my third entry...
- From Ms. Ellis: "Given our recent and continuing focus on social emotional learning, I came across a resource published this month by the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The report looks at 25 widely used tools for social emotional learning. It breaks down the skills taught by each program and the research behind it. I just wanted to share it in case you are interested in learning more about the approaches out there. It also includes a nice background on SEL."
