ALICE Training for Students
Preparing our Students for Lock-Outs and Lock-Downs
ALICE FACT SHEET FOR PARENTS
Skills and Knowledge are the Keys to Staying Safe
You can teach children to be safe without scaring them – You just need to know how. Young people are at risk of assault, abduction, and abuse even in caring families, schools, and communities. Skills and knowledge are the keys to keeping kids safe. The good news is that there are simple and effective ways of teaching children how to protect themselves. Next week we will begin teaching all of our students ALICE strategies to stay safe during building lock-down.
Key components of our lessons will focus on the following:
- What does ALICE stand for? (Parents see this link for information on ALICE)
- What is an intruder? (see video below)
- Lock-out vs. Lock-down
- Stop, Look, and Listen Rule
- Evacuating
- Knowing Exits (Students will take a tour to see all exits)
- Rally Point (Students will take a walk to show them how to get to the our Rally Point, Lawrence Country Club, from their nearest exit)
- Barricading (Students will practice identifying and using items to barricade the door)
- Countering (Students will practice identifying items they could throw to create noise and distractions)
- "What ifs" (We will review what students should do if they are in another classroom, hallway or bathrooms during a lock-down)
- What to expect during a lock-down drill

What Parents Need to Know
Here is some basic information parents need to know if there is an intruder evacuation:
- Rally Point - parents should go to the Rally Point (Lawrence Country Club - Club House) to meet their children.
- Fake News: News spread over the grapevine (social media) is lightning fast, but often filled with inaccuracies. Information gained in this manner should not be taken as fact until confirmed by either Law Enforcement or District Administration.
- Updates: During a crisis, parents will receive updates through School Messenger and /or Email.
- Contact Information: Keep your contact number and email current with the school by contacting the main office with any changes.
- Student Cell Phones: While we recognize many students have cell phones, and parents will be anxious to hear from their child during a crisis, we will insist that they focus on their safety above all else.
- Lock-Out: Unsafe situation somewhere near the school. Front doors are locked. Day proceeds as usual, but no one is allowed outside until all clear is given.
- Lock-Down: Unsafe situation in the building. Staff decide to evacuate or barricade and counter.
- Evacuate: Running straight out nearest exit until able to hide behind houses or other barriers.
- Rally Point: Meeting place after a building evacuation (Lawrence Country Club)
- Barricade: Moving items in front of the door to prevent someone from getting in the room.
- Countering: Finding objects to throw, finding a place to hide. If barricade is broken, students taught to throw items, run, yell to create distraction.
