JCSS Family Engagement Newsletter

Message From The Family Engagement Team: Keep it up!
Hello, everyone! It has only been a month since our last newsletter, but so much has changed! Desk are full, masks are on, and social distancing guidelines are being followed as closely as possible at each and every campus. We missed our students, and we are so happy they are back in either traditional or virtual models of instruction. The good news is that families are engaged in the education process now more than ever! You are doing a wonderful job! Keep up the good work! We are continuing to update the Jones County School website and Family Engagement Newsletters to keep you informed of the most current information. Visit the JCSS website to find monthly newsletters with lots of fun activities to do at home, as well as updates within the system. We are all still trying to adjust to the new "normal".
Remember this: You are your child's BEST FIRST TEACHER! You've got this, and if you need help, we are here for you. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns. Reach out if you have questions. If we do not know the answer to your questions, we will guide you in the right direction!

Multiplication at HOME
Steve Wyborney, a mathematics leader from Oregon, has created a multiplication course – on YouTube – to share with everyone! It’s entirely free (there are no ads) and he is giving it to all teachers, parents, and students who would like access. This animated, interactive series includes 156 short videos for students in grades 3-8. The course includes deep, rich thinking, hands-on activities, multiple representations, visual thinking, challenging puzzles, and even lessons on 3-dimensional drawing that will help students think deeply about multiplication ideas.
Here is the entire course: https://www.youtube.com/c/SteveWyborneyMath/playlists.
Again, it is completely free for all students, all teachers, all families, and all schools. This course is specifically designed to work in both in-school and distance learning scenarios. It also includes the same sense of invitation that he used when creating Splat! and Esti-Mysteries.This resource is for all educators or parents working with children who are learning about multiplication in grades 3-8. It’s designed for everyone, so feel free to spread the word!
At Reading Partners we know the learning doesn’t begin and end in the classroom. Research shows that family involvement is the number one predictor of early literacy success and future academic achievement. We encourage family members to read at home with their kids every day and stay involved in their children’s educational experience.
We want parents, guardians, and other relatives caring for children to become the best reading partners for their kids. Here are some resources to help you stay educated and informed about early literacy.
Transition Resources for Parents, Teachers, and Administrators
The beginning of the school year can be an uncertain time for students, especially for those who will be making a major transition into elementary school, middle school, high school, or college. For these students, there are many curiosities and questions about academic rigor, managing a social life, handling coursework, and worries about using a combination lock. (It took me more than a couple of tries.)
Fortunately, there are plenty of resources on the web with useful information for all stakeholders -- parents, students, educators, and administrators -- to help support a successful transition to the next major stepping stone. Here are a few for each milestone in the K-12 pipeline and beyond.
