BUDGET VOTE ON MAY 21
APTA DONATES $2,750 TO BACKPACK PROGRAM
The Averill Park Teachers Association presented the Averill Park Backpack Program with a check for $2,750. The Backpack Program provides a child with a bag of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food every Friday to be enjoyed throughout the weekend. The food is placed in a bag and distributed discreetly to students.
MICHAEL BESKID NAMED 3M NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Senior Michael Beskid has been selected as a recipient in the 3M Merit Scholarship competition. The National Merit 3M Scholarship is in recognition of academic promise and distinguished performance in the 2019 competition. Way to go Michael!
ALGONQUIN TEAM WINS BATTLE OF THE BELTS
Algonquin Middle School and Averill Park High School students were able to take part in a full day of activities at the 18th Annual Sean's Run in Chatham recently. In total, 15 students participated and Algonquin placed first in the Battle of the Belts competition. The team consisted of Greg Effman, Owen Perala, Sam Bonesteel and Tyler Michaels. Read more here.
STUDENT ARTWORK DISPLAYED AT QUESTAR III EXHIBIT
Questar III is holding its 30th Annual Juried High School Art Exhibit and three Averill Park students have their art work showcased at Hudson Valley Community College. Jamic Holzman's “Magic of Forgetting the World”, Elizabeth Owens' “Franklin” and Lillian Bursey's “Frozen in Time” are all included in the exhibit.
MAGGIE SCANNELL IS ON TOP OF THE WORLD
Algonquin Middle School seventh grader Maggie Scannell recently attended the Ice Hockey World Selects Invitational in Geneva and Chamonix in Europe. Along with her team, the Midwest Select, Maggie played 10 games and placed first in the 14U tournament with the final win coming against Russian team, SHD Global. In addition to playing ice hockey, Maggie also competes on the varsity girls lacrosse team for Averill Park.
AMS CELEBRATES RICHTOL'S READ ALL DAY
Author James Preller was Algonquin’s special guest for its 16th annual Richtol’s Read All Day. News Channel 10 anchor John Gray, some of Mrs. Mouzakes’ grade 8 Theater students and Mrs. Magill K-8 Interventionist, volunteered their time to read to groups in the auditorium. Read more here.
SPANISH LANGUAGE STUDENTS TREATED TO CONCERT
Spanish language students from a number of schools were treated to a concert by Edgar Rene at Averill Park High School. Edgar is a musician from Puerto Rico and the concert was attended by 500 students from the Capital Region. Fourteen Averill Park students were able to choreograph a dance they performed with Edgar. STATISTICS STUDENTS SHOWCASE DANGERS OF IMPAIRED DRIVING
Students at Averill Park High School got a first-hand look at what it would feel like to be under the influence without having to experience taking drugs or alcohol. Ms. Nicole Freeman’s Statistics class completed a project that looked at the visual aspect of impairment and reaction time associated with it, and calculated data based on experiments. Averill Park senior Sophia Morone signed her National Letter of Intent to compete on the track and field team for Division I Binghamton University. Read more here.
STUDENTS RECOGNIZED WITH PE AWARD
Congratulations to our elementary school 5th grade students who were recognized with the Sandra G. Morely Physical Education Leadership Award at HVCC this week! Students from all around the Capital Region were honored for their excellence and leadership in PE. For a list of students, click here.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO
Elementary School students from across the district attended an instrument petting zoo this week at Algonquin Middle School. Students had the opportunity to try a variety of instruments that they can choose from to learn to play in fifth grade.
HS STUDENTS BECOME ROLE MODELS
Mrs. Malone's students have been working with Averill Park High School students this year. The high schoolers have been caring role models for some of our students at WSL! It has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
PARK PLAYHOUSE THEATRE PERFORMS AT POESTENKILL
Park Playhouse Theatre presented "A Tortoise and the Hare" to Poestenkill Elementary students on Friday morning as a part of PES Pride character ed program. This month's focus is honesty.
PRE-PROM/DINNER DANCE ASSEMBLY FEATURES CONCERT
Averill Park students were able to experience a live concert as part of their Pre-Prom/Dinner Dance Assembly this week. The performance was sponsored by our Averill Park Education Foundation. Read more here.
LEARNING THE WATER CYCLE
Third Grade students in Miss Grogan's class are learning about the water cycle. In science, the students each made a "water cycle in a bag" to learn and observe the 4 main stages of the water cycle. They also made flip books to learn more about each stage!
ESYO WIND ENSEMBLE PERFORMS ON MOTHERS DAY
Congratulations to Emily Jorden, Abigayle Jorden and Anthony Pastizzo for their Mother's Day performance as part of the Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) Wind Ensemble! Read more about it here.
MAKING MOTHERS DAY CRAFTS
Even high school students make Mother’s Day crafts! Students in Ms. Ferlito's class made gifts for their mothers using recycled yogurt containers and succulents from the Horticulture club.
K-KIDS VOLUNTEER AT REGIONAL FOOD BANK
West Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids volunteered at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York as an end of year service project. The kids were asked to count and package fish sticks, and donated $100 to the Food Bank to help with the amazing work they do.
FALCONER VISITS GRADE 6 STUDENTS
On May 10, Grade 6 students experienced an assembly with falconer, Brian Bradley. Mr. Bradley shared with students his journey in becoming a falconer and a tremendous amount of information about birds of prey. Read more here.
1ST GRADERS LEARN ANIMAL COMMUNICATION
PES 1st Graders were visited by Mr. Lloyd Barnhart, who shared knowledge of animal communication. Mr. Barnhart, a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, shared animal calls with the students and the different reasons animals would be communicating with each other. The students each had the opportunity to try a turkey call!
COWBOY DAVE AND THE ALBANY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Third and Fourth Grade students from MHSL, PES and WSL elementary schools attended an outstanding, interactive concert performed by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, featuring Cowboy Dave!
GRAPHING IN THIRD GRADE
Mrs. Guyer's 3rd grade class in West Sand Lake Elementary School have been working graphing and decided to ask each other questions to gather data, saying, "I moustache you a questions."
