D.W. Daniel High School
October 2019
Message from the Principal
This month, the State Department of Education will release our 2018-2019 school report cards. D. W. Daniel High School has been rated as an “Excellent” school. When rating high schools, the state looks at Academic Achievement, College and Career Readiness, and Student Engagement as some of the biggest indicators impacting school success. In all areas, Daniel students excelled.
In Academic Achievement, the state looked at End of Course scores. D. W. Daniel High School had a higher percentage of students scoring a “C” or higher on the End of Course Exams in English 1, Algebra 1, Biology and US History, than the state or the district. For College and Career Readiness, the state assesses student scores on standardized tests, and in career readiness indicators. Among traditional high schools, DWD has the second highest average SAT score in the state. On the WIN Career Readiness Assessment, over 85% of our student body scored at the silver level or higher. For student engagement, a survey was given to all stakeholders at the school. Our faculty and student body rated DWD as a high school where they felt connected, engaged, and prepared for future success.
I believe the state report card reflects what we see everyday at D.W. Daniel, that our students are amazing and that Daniel is a great place to go to school and to work! We are proud of our student body and proud of their achievements.
Go Lions!

Hard Work Pays Off
Three SC-941 cadets from the Class of 2018 are currently attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are Alex Fitzgerald, Lauren Hazlett, and Daniel Perry. The photo below shows Alex Fitzgerald saluting The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, earlier this year when he visited the Academy. The second picture shows Lauren Hazlett and Alex Fitzgerald pinning rank on Daniel Perry. This was the first time SC-941 has ever put three cadets from the same class into a service academy.
Terry Fox Run
Most people have never heard of Terry Fox. Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. At age 18, Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated due to cancer, he embarked on an east to west cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Terry ran a 26-mile marathon every day to raise money for cancer research. Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometers (3,339 mi), and ultimately cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$750 million has been raised in his name as of 2018.
On September 21, 2019, the SC-941 “Flying Lions” Cadet Corps held their 10th Annual Terry Fox Run at Southern Wesleyan University. Major Childress started this event eleven years ago, and so far the unit has raised over $11,500 for cancer research. You can still donate to this great cause through Daniel AFJROTC until Tuesday October 1. SC-941 will continue to fight this evil enemy for many years to come.

SC-941 Awareness Presentation
D. W. Daniel AFJROTC APT group has been very busy in 2019. Our APT group Led by Cadet Olivia Kittle has been meeting with children from the local elementary schools teaching them about the community, as well as leadership, discipline, the American Flag, and why we are so blessed to live in the United States of America.
Driven
On September 14, 2019, SC-941 competed in the four and a half mile Liberty Red Devil Raider Meet. The SC-941 Raiders Team is in their third year of competing. Raider’s competitions consist of an obstacle course ranging from four and a half miles to ten miles. We entered a four person team and a five person team in the mixed division, competing against over twenty teams from Liberty, Spartanburg, Pickens, Seneca, West Oak, and Pendleton High Schools. Our team leaders, Cadet Kris Moon and Cadet Sam Murrow, put their teams through grueling conditioning to get ready for the event. Their hard work paid off, resulting in our four person A team (Kris Moon, Olivia Kittle, Cody Stancell, and Will Trotter) posting the fastest time and winning first place. Our B team (Sam Murrow, Caitlynn Holder, Conner Sutherlan, Courtney Smith, and Michael Rash) recorded an incredible time, helping SC-941 earn 2nd place in the combined A/B team mixed division. This competition included the 100 yard tractor tire flip, 100 yard low crawl, and 200 yard, 40 pound jerry can run. See pictures below.

Our first meeting of the Interact Club was held on September 24 in the cafeteria. Students learned about all of the service opportunities available this year. The Rotary Club sponsors the Interact Club and service includes: volunteering at Clemson’s Child Development Center, packing food at Clemson Community Care, providing presents at Christmas, and celebrating Valentine’s Day at a local retirement home. The next meeting will be on November 19 at 3:15 in the cafeteria.
Table Tennis Society
The Table Tennis Society began play on September 25. Meetings follow on October 9 and 23 in room 235. This year TTS will be hosting a tournament with prizes highlighting the best ping pong players at Daniel High. See the school announcements for more details.
Clemson WOW
Clemson WOW (What’s in our Waters?) led a class discussion and water quality role-playing activity on September 25, 2019. The WOW program promotes “Citizen Science” where anyone can collect data and report on stream quality throughout the country. On Friday, September 27, 2019, 54 AP Environmental Science students collected chemical data, and cataloged macro invertebrates (larvae that are sensitive to water quality) to determine the overall health of Indian Creek in Clemson’s Experimental Issaqueena Forest. Students will analyze the data and create poster presentations for Clemson’s Biological Science Symposium held in Spring 2020.
Tiger Alliance
On September 19th, members of the Daniel High Tiger Alliance group had the opportunity to tour two college campuses, learn about resources to help prepare them for college, and to explore local resources. We started on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University. After a tour of the campus, professors and advisors met with the students. Dr. Joe Crosby gave the students a motivational address, encouraging the students to be men who reach their potential by being ready and prepared for opportunities when they come their way. Cindy Trimmier-Lee presented information about the TRIO program and what resources would be available to them through this federal program. The Admissions office gave a presentation about the university.
After eating in the SWU cafeteria, we traveled to Tri-County Technical College. We met with staff who shared what resources were available to them on their campus and gave some general career advice to our students. We had a tour around campus and learned about the many different opportunities that a technical college has to offer.
