Mental Health Matters: Brought to you by the CCA School Therapists
- Have you felt it? The energy of the autumnal equinox has been in full-force lately as days shorten and feelings are high. During this time, it is common for many people to feel heavy emotions. Psychologist David Rock explains: You can reduce stress by up to 50% by noticing and naming your feeling, which helps create some distance between the emotion and the intense feelings that accompany it. This concept was introduced by Dr. Siegel known as; “Name it to tame it.”
- When you are noticing strong emotions this fall, we encourage you and your student(s) to practice your deep breathing with the exercise below.
- World Mental Health day is October 10th. Please take a moment to talk about mental health in your home. Here is a great image of mental health created by Akanksha Jha.
- With PLPs (personalized learning plans) around the corner, we encourage you to remember the Growth Mindset. Dr. Carol Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to explain people's underlying beliefs about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger and will try harder. They put in extra time and energy, which leads to higher achievement. So let’s encourage our students to change their fixed mindsets to growth mindsets this fall!
Going into PLPs, try discussing with your child(ren):
1. What is your student proud of?
2. What are your student’s strengths?
3. What can your student work on?
Reminders:
10/11-10/13 - PLP Days with parents and teachers
10/13-10/14 - No School
