The next PTC meeting is on April 1st at 6:30 pm in the Idea Lab. Most of our wonderful PTC members are going to be leaving at the end of this school year so now is a great time to get involved! If you are interested in participating on the board next year, please reach out to gatesmillspto@gmail.com
Outdoor Classroom
The fifth grade class would like to take their fundraising money this year and enhance our outdoor classroom on the Trepal trail. Fifth grade has been collaborating with the EXCEL students from the horticultural center to improve this space. They started clearing an area and will help the older students another day soon to get this area ready for an outdoor learning experience!

Note from the Clinic
Also, please remember to return clothing items that have been borrowed from the clinic. We are running low on clothing items...especially girl pants.
If your child requires medication of any kind please be sure to drop it off in the clinic with the appropriate paperwork from the doctor. Please note that parents must bring in all medication. Students cannot drop medication off in the clinic.
Health Update
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to go outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal. We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into should they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for your children.
Inside the Idea Lab
On February 19 in Idea Lab we read The Journey by Francesca Sanna. This beautifully illustrated picture book introduces a powerful and moving perspective on migration for readers of all ages. The Journey is one of our March Book Madness contenders for 2020, and is also endorsed by Amnesty International UK “because it reminds us that we all have the right to a safe place to live.” After reading the story we discussed things such as the symbolism of the color black throughout the story, the use of perspective to make scary things seem much larger, and similarities to other books we have recently read. Students were then asked to choose a medium to express their thoughts, feelings, or impressions of the story; see some of our best creations pictured below. If you would like to learn more about this book and the issues it addresses, or find discussion guides to use with your children, please visit www.amnesty.org.uk/education.
Our next library day will be Tuesday, February 25. We will continue to focus on featured titles for Black History Month, fairy tales (Dewey Decimal 398.2 section), and biographies. Please help your children search for those misplaced library books, and remember to help them keep their books in their hands or in their bags! If your child loses a book, please contact me before purchasing a replacement so that you are sure to get the correct version of the book. Thanks!
