Sartartia Middle School 11.15.20

Hey Jags,

We hope that everyone enjoyed the weekend and we are wishing a Happy Diwali to all our Jag families and community that are celebrating. We have one week left until our Thanksgiving Break and this week will be filled with several activities for parents, students, and staff.

Our counselors will be hosting a virtual Parent University focused on social media and bullying and we will also have a virtual Gifted & Talented Parent Meeting to review updates for the 2020-2021 school year. Also, our PTO is hosting a "Pies from Parents" to recognize and say thanks to our teachers and staff for all of they work they are doing this year. As we continue to engage students in classrooms and the community, we hope that you will continue to join us in supporting the different events and programs we having going on at Sartartia.

Here are a few quick reminders for the week:

  • Please be sure to send your child with a refillable water bottle to school each day. As we continue to follow all health & safety protocols, our water fountains are not useable but we have water bottle fillers available throughout the school
  • Please be sure to review the FBISD's Updated 2020-2021 Instructional Calendar below

With Jag Pride,

Cholly Oglesby

End of Progress Report #4 (PR4)

Saniyah Jenkins has been an amazing addition to the 7th grade Lady Jags volleyball team. She has been working hard on the court every morning with her team as well as on her own at home to improve her individual skills. She always has a positive attitude and is encouraging and uplifting towards her teammates - even when the game isn't going their way. She is a role model for her teammates and classmates. Saniyah demonstrates what it means to be a leader and collaborative citizen.

Pies from Parents

The administration, teachers and staff at Sartartia have been working tirelessly for several months. They have given so much of their time and energy for their students, our children. Help us showing our appreciation by sending them home with a "Pie From A Parent" this Thanksgiving break. The sign-up genius has been created to ensure a good variety but any flavor will do. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Please drop off your pie(s) to SMS on Thursday, November 19th by 1pm. Thank you! Sign-up to donate here.

Parent U: Social Media & Bullying

Please join us for a Parent University presentation from our counselors about social media and bullying. We are happy to have received your feedback on the survey at the beginning of the year and present to you on this topic. We will be covering: social media, cyberbullying, bullying and solving peer conflict. We hope you can join us virtually Tuesday, November 17 from 5:30-6:30pm. Click here to join the meeting

Virtual GT Parent Meeting

On Wednesday, November 18th we will be holding a virtual informational parent meeting for parents of identified Gifted & Talented students. The meeting will be held in Microsoft Teams from 6:00-7:00pm. The meeting will be facilitated by our campus Champion of Gifted Service (COG) and introduce parents to the Texas Performance Standards Projects for middle school students across the district. Please contact our COG, Debbie Engle, with questions or for more information. Join Meeting Here

PTO Cash Drive

As you know the school is under construction. We need your help to bring a few blank walls to life. Your donations will help cover the cost of a new mural being painted in the big gym. Additionally, the curved wall by the counseling office is being covered with a printed mural that will motivate and inspire the students. We kindly ask for a monetary donation to the SMS PTO Cash Jag Drive. This is the only cash fundraiser drive for our PTO for the school year. Our annual goal is $25,000 and by donating $25/student we can definitely reach that goal! Please consider donating. Thank you to those who have already donated. Donate online or download the form to donate in person or by mail.

FBISD Coding Camp

Coding Camp is a virtual event open to FBISD students in grades K-8 and designed to help students to build creatively, reason systematically and apply computational thinking skills while learning how to code. This year the event will be held virtually with students using Teams, Schoology, and coding programs such as Scratch to practice coding skills. There will be workshops for all levels of users that allow students to either learn the basics of coding or go more in-depth with topics such as the creation of games and animations. Click here for more information and to register for Coding Camp.

Connecting to BYOD Network

We are finding that some students that bring a device (BYOD) to school are unable to connect to the district’s BYOD network (FBISD_BYOD). While there are various reasons for this problem, one of the prominent issues is the fact that some students have “Restricted Access” (RA). RA access is granted when a parent decides to not allow “Full Access” to district resources for their student and that student will NOT have access to district’s BYOD network. We know that some parents have inadvertently selected this option at the start of school (part of online registration process) while others may have intentionally selected this option however may want to change it at this point. A job aid was sent to parents with information on how to make this change in Skyward, but you may also choose to call the campus for assistance.

Parent Support: Saving Student Work

As Fort Bend ISD students have increased their use of digital platforms, it has become increasingly important that students save and back up their work as a best practice. This best practice is critical to avoid data loss in instances of student schedule changes. The District recommends two methods for students to save and back-up their work: Schoology Portfolios and Microsoft OneDrive.

  1. Schoology Portfolios can be used as digital storage to save student work or showcase achievements and reflect on what they learn. The table below explains how to create the Schoology Student Portfolio and utilize this feature to save student work.
  2. Microsoft OneDrive is a cloud-based storage solution that is more secure and accessible than using device storage or flash drive storage. Even if something were to happen to the device, the personal files and folders would still be on OneDrive.

The attached document provides information on how to use the Schoology Portfolio and Microsoft OneDrive to save student work.
