Sigler Elementary Monday Memo

February 8th

Own It

Our theme at Sigler Elementary this year is “OWN IT”. These two simple words set the stage for the 2015-2016 school year and serve as a reminder for students, staff and families that regardless of the circumstances, we must “OWN IT”. There can be no excuses. Each student, teacher and family that walks through our doors has a story to share and obstacles to overcome. Our goal is to empower our students, teachers and families to meet these obstacles head on, overcome them, regardless of their size and “OWN IT”!

NO EXCUSES - "Own It"

February is Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, Sigler Elementary is celebrating Black History Month, through the voices of the Sigler Community. Teachers, staff, parents and/or community members who are interested in answering the question, "Why is Black History Month Important to You?" are encouraged to sign up for a time slot, by clicking here to share your answer with students at Sigler Elementary on morning announcements. If you are interested in submitting a video response, please submit the response to matt.arend@pisd.edu.

Sigler Family Literacy

Sigler Family Literacy, partnering with Plano Family Literacy shares the belief that the parent is the child's first teacher in life. Our mission is to build healthy families by working with the entire family unit developing life skills, literacy skills, and a strong commitment to family wholeness.

There are 5 components that make up Sigler Family Literacy

  • Adult Education - Multi faceted literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency and assisting children in life-long learning and school success
  • Early Childhood Education - An age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences
  • Parent Education - Training and support for parents on how to be the primary teacher for their children. This component teaches parents how to be full partners in the education of their child
  • Integrated Literacy - Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children designed as a partnership in teaching
  • Home Visits - Personal visits to participants’ homes by staff members to teach collaboration of school and home learning

Sigler Family Literacy meets at Sigler Elementary each Monday and Wednesday from 8AM - 11AM and on Thursday at the Bird Family Literacy Center.

For more information please contact Dellmy Cabrera or Matt Arend at Sigler Elementary.

A Goal for 2016...Learning Walks - A Six Part Series...

What I Learned from Twitter This Week...

Do You Follow Sigler Elementary on Twitter? You Should Be!

Week of February 8th

(Items in Bold - Student Opportunities)

As a staff, we identified peer classroom visits or learning walks as an area we wanted to grow in. Our goal for 2016 is for each staff member to complete three visits or learning walks. These can happen on your time (planning, lunch, counselor, library or while another staff member covers your classroom). If we make it important enough, it will make us better. Read here: Stepping Into Each Other's Classrooms.

Shoparoo is school fundraising made easy: the free app turns pictures of your everyday shopping receipts into cash donations and sweepstakes entries for our school! Yep, it’s that simple. No more cutting labels, selling door to door, or time-consuming coordinating. All you have to do is shop as you normally do, snap pictures of your receipts with the app, and voila Just shop, snap, earn!

Get started today:

1. Download the free Shoparoo app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

2. Select our school from the list and start taking pictures of your receipts - shop anywhere, buy anything!

3. The first 20 supporters at our school will earn an extra $1 donation from Shoparoo for their first receipt!

4. Earn even more Roo Points, or cash donations, by inviting others to join using your personal referral code

5. You can even select a grade to support and have fun with grade competitions!

There’s no limit to how much money we can raise with Shoparoo - the more supporters, the more we will raise for our school. Schools with just 40 supporters are earning an average of $1,000 every year. That’s free, easy money that we could be fundraising too. Check out shoparoo.com to learn more about this awesome app!
